The sun crested the distant cliffs across the vast expanse of sand and dirt in front of them, and in a blink the purple of the Barsoomian night was chased away by brilliant daggers of sunlight. Dejah whooped and shouted “It is three days’ ride— follow me!”
John Carter does not know much about Barsoom, Tharks, Helium or the struggles of red men. During the three days' ride to the river Iss, and then Helium, he learns.

Hal’s lithe body is taut as a longbow, drawn almost to its breaking point. But here--inland, far from the sea, John knows he must now be stone to Hal’s sinew, the iron of burning muscles as they strain for one more inch of draw, the better to send an arrow thudding with certainty through French armor to puncture French hearts.
Hal and John, on the eve of Agincourt.
When the Californian morning comes - pale, watery, gentle in its way - and with it, the new cacophony of a world utterly unconcerned with the struggles of angels or demons, John floats for a moment in ignorant lassitude. He can feel, behind closed eyes, the memories of the last few days snapping like dogs at the edge of his consciousness, and makes the decision to roll over and bury his face in a misshapen pillow instead. Maybe if I lie here long enough, he thinks, I can suffocate myself and sneak into heaven instead of getting up today.
After saving the world, John wakes up the next day.

Life was slower in the desert. That was the thing most offworlders couldn’t ever seem to understand. The people and the slow cycle of their lives was governed by the turning of the twin suns, queens and lovers Tatao and Tati in the old tongue, smiling their harsh and burning benevolence at the blushing sand. Moving too fast meant sweating, and sweating meant loss of moisture, and loss of moisture meant that many fewer klicks you could travel before you dropped dead.
Luke and Biggs meet an offworlder one afternoon at Chalmun's.
