“I wasn’t going to let him kill you,” she repeats, quieter this time. The room is dark, but she can see his face clearly. The moon reflects off the fallen snow, picturesque but for the smallpox and the nuclear bombs and them.

“Are you going to run me through, then?” His pale hair was a mess in the summer heat. “Who would lead the Dead Men for you? What would you do, suddenly saddled with another gaggle of western knights you haven’t a clue how to manage?”

Zalbag had cuffed him then. He hadn’t said any of the myriad oaths and minor blasphemies that had fired through his brain, but it had been an instant in which he broke with reserve and allowed anger to master him. Whatever relief he might have had of it did little to prepare him for Wiegraf’s tackle. He’d been knocked against the wall before he could brace for it. He’d never been much of a boxer.

The wounds on Henry's face healed quickly, leaving him remote and quiet and handsomer than ever. A few days in, they were sitting bundled up in the autumn sun staring out at the lake, and in the light through the changing leaves all golden brown and dying red, he was like some kind of artwork. One of those richly-painted people sitting lonesome in an Automat or a hotel, the strong bones of his face casting smudgy shadows, his eyes turned down at the corners.

But as the echoes of the beating left Henry, somehow Johnny felt like they were moving inside him: an ache like a swollen nose, a sting like a cut.

The rhythm of the city changed in ‘29, of course, but Hildy found the new beat easily enough. When she crossed the bridge into the wilds of New Jersey, she left behind a string of broken-hearted nice young men who’d once had promising futures in legitimate business and who swore they would make good again, give her a happy home. It sounded like a threat to her every time.

The oil from that child's tree had tasted sweet, like honey and despair.

'Banana nut duck bread,' some flicker of memory had suggested. That would go well with honey. Would go well with despair. There had been something so familiar about the way the Edelwood had crept up over the small, frail body once the child had given up hope.
