Summary
Sequel to Of Ratts and Men. City 17 may have been destroyed, but the Combine still reign supreme over Earth. Not only that, but Eli is miraculously alive and Alyx has gone missing. Now, the Half-Life gang must search for the fabled Borealis, an Aperture ship long gone missing, in order to find Dr. Mossman and retrieve the portal technology they need to find Alyx and finally beat the Combine. Lucky for them, three of the best candidates for the task have just emerged from a crumbling underground facility. Not so lucky for the Half-Life crew, the Combine has found them first.
Follows the events of HL: Alyx, mostly canon-compliant but the timeline may be less so in order to bring all these characters together at once. Spoilers for all associated Half-Life and Portal games, including the ending of HL: Alyx. No warnings apply, but rated teen for non-graphic violence and war-related themes as well as mention of PTSD and Schizophrenia. Currently Beta'd by the wonderful PastSelf on ff.net!
Update Corner (4/12/2021): Ch3 in progress, approx. 60% finished, Ch4 also in progress, approx. 5% finished.

This is a story about the voices we don't hear from. The ones who aren't heroes. The ones just trying to survive.

Summary
Barney first seems rather content laying back and waiting for what's to come, but as seconds pass and no relief comes, he sits up.
“...Everything alright?” He raises a brow, and Gordon sits back on his heels with an expression far too annoyed for what they’re up to.
“...I can’t figure out how to undo your pants,” he grumbles, and Barney finds himself pursing his lips to keep from laughing at the extraordinarily little problem.

Half Life: the game everyone exists because of. "Reality" is a complicated mess, and the Science Team can only really start to untangle it all after they finally leave the game. Where are they now, though, if not a video game world that constricts them to very particular roles they were meant for? Who are they now after the game, if not NPCs, or the player? What exactly does it mean, to not be real? They may be living post-game domestic bliss, but that doesn't take away from the things they went through. They've got a lot to unpack.
