Coincidentally, the physical effects of romantic and sexual desire match up very closely with the physical effects of fear. But it's not a problem-- it's not like anyone is going to be able to hear the way your heart speeds up, or see the minute dilation of your pupils, are they? They'd have to be some sort of Superhuman to do that.
And what's worse than a Superhuman hearing that quick pulse and seeing those dilated eyes and concluding that you're in love with them?
A Superhuman hearing that quick pulse and seeing those dilated eyes and thinking you're terrified of them.

It takes Derek a couple years to catch on. He's so used to being used in a relationship, that it doesn't register to him that what he has with Stiles isn't merely friendship anymore. Not that he had been in a place where he could've mentally processed the idea of a relationship, even a year back, but working with his therapist has gotten him a long way from the terrified 23-year old, to a somewhat functioning adult.
In the end, it takes a few full pots of coffee, a couple trips to the pharmacy, a dozen lunch dates with Stiles and his father, and a couple centuries old sorcerer for him to finally connect the dots.

It's been months. Months of lonely days and lonelier nights.
And Stiles can't understand what he did wrong.
“Oh thank God you’re home, my phone’s dead and I think my oven might be a little bit on fire,” Stiles says as soon as Derek has the door open, the smell of smoke coming from her open apartment door.
“Jesus Stiles,” Derek curses as he runs into his kitchen for the fire extinguisher he keeps in the pantry, grabbing it and pulling the pin out as he rushes past Stiles and into the girl’s apartment. The oven is half open while rolls of thick gray smoke waver out, Derek points the nozzle of the extinguisher at the oven and presses the lever down, the foam coating the appliance in white.
“What the hell happened?” Derek questions the girl, turning away from the now fireless oven to see the girl standing in the doorway of the kitchen biting her bottom lip in worry. Derek tried to focus on the conversation and not his little crush on the girl.
“I may have put a pizza in for dinner and left it in there for a while,” Stiles mutters softly.
Stiles lives across the hall from fireman Derek and Deputy Parrish and is a bit of a mess, but it's okay because they think she's a pretty cute mess
Stiles needs new kidney's. Well that isn't new news by a long shot. He knew the chances of him getting one after this long was slim to none. He had basically given up on life figuring it would be easier for him to just except his fate. Then Derek comes into the picture, even if Stiles still doesn't have and hope of living at least now he has something to live for.
