“My offer still stands,” Lou whispers, her lips at the shell of Debbie's ear.
“California?” Debbie's voice cracks when Lou's hands trace over the silhouette of her dress. There's no skin-on-skin contact but she feels it in every inch of her body. Goosebumps prickle at her arms and up the back of her neck, and if Lou were to mention it, she'd certainly blame the cool night air. But she knows. Of course she knows. “Louise Miller, are you asking me to live in sin with you?”

Questions of survival and the future consume Therese, and just when the panic swirls up her throat and threatens to choke her, Carol takes her hand once again, brushing her thumb across Therese's wrist and palm. “You're ok. I promise you're going to be ok,” Carol whispers.
She's uncertain why, but Therese feels safe beside her.
"It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge."
Four years suffering through a teaching degree and this is what she has to look forward to: a classroom where she can put up cat and puppy posters as she sees fit.
“Living the dream, Therese,” she sighs quietly.
The voice that calls her is feminine and smoky, deeper than she’s used to in her small social circle. For some reason unknown to Therese, the tone causes a shiver to run down the back of her neck.

“Christ, Lou, this is-” Debbie stops for another bite and moans in delight. “I might actually eat my vegetables if they were all like this.”
Lou rolls her eyes. “You are such a child, you know that?”
“Says the woman whose diet mainly consists of watered down vodka, cheap cigarettes and Red Hots.”
“You're just here because your little heist will go to shit without me.” She slurs her words slightly as she speaks.
“You're a mean drunk,” Debbie comments.
Lou sets the vodka down and flattens her palms against her desk. Debbie is actually amazed when she manages to stand upright. “Not mean,” Lou corrects. “Just honest.”
