(The singular cavernous eye, it’s width spanning half the sunless sky, blinks. It focuses, peers down, studies the small form in the water.)

After a moment of clear deliberation, Viney steeples her fingers together, furrowing her eyebrows at her cautiously. “...Promise you won’t freak out.”

After a disastrous life-long school career, Luz’s first year at Hexside High is supposed to be a new start, and she’s not going to let anything ruin it. Especially not herself. She starts her year resolved to have a completely ordinary experience.
This plan goes completely out the window when it turns out that Hexside is nothing like she expects, in that a) she’s actually accepted onto their cheerleading squad (first try, even!), b) she makes actual friends who like her who she is (?!) and c) she’s given a mysterious pen pal who may turn out to understand her better than anyone else she’s ever met.

But Fig couldn’t swallow down the race of panicked adrenaline that had flooded her body when she saw the first flash of uncertainty on Gorgug’s face. When he’d realized, a heartbeat before it started, that he needed to cough. Something so benign that sent them both panicking on the couch.

He shrugs, a big movement that involves his shoulders and waggling his head and his arms waving up and down. It’s so incredibly, perfectly, horrifyingly Gorgug that something inside Fig snaps.
Her legs give out from under her and suddenly Fig is kneeling on the floor. She feels distant, far away and detached from her body. Like she’s reading all the information from the neurons firing in her brain off of a tidy, organized list instead of feeling it. Her body is shaking, trembling. There’s something wet on her face, and at first Fig thinks it's blood- everything else is blood, so why not this too?- but no. Tears. She’s crying. Maybe she’s also laughing. Her ankle hurts where she twisted it running through the woods, and now it's jammed up awkwardly under her butt where she fell to her knees. Her throat hurts. She was screaming earlier, a lot, and maybe she’s screaming now, too? Nobody can hear. Just Gorgug. It’s just her and Gorgug. Everyone else is dead and there’s no one around for miles.
He told them that so many times- there’s no one around for miles, kids, did you know that?
