“You and Nev did Herbology together, right?” Hannah prompts with a smile, glancing between the two of them.
It’s second nature to downplay and deny it after all those years of trying to keep her interest in it under wraps. But just now, the solid warmth of Neville’s thigh presses against hers and she feels the shift beneath her ribs, like latches clicking into place and giving space for her lungs to expand normally for once.
“We did,” she says, letting herself meet his eyes for a fraction of a second.
“He told me you were better at it than him, which I find hard to belie—”
“That’s because it’s not true,” Pansy interrupts, turning to Neville. She raises a brow, feigning confidence when her insides are a twisting, pulsing mess of something with a terribly long wingspan. Pixies? Doxies? A fucking hippogriff? “Are you taking the piss?”
Neville shakes his head, eyes bright with mirth though his mouth stays serious. “No, are you? You’re brilliant. Always have been.”

“I said to stay in the car,” he reminds her, trying to check his temper.
“Right, because me, alone, in a car with breakable windows is so much safer,” she rolls her eyes and then waves her arm out vaguely at the people loitering around the front of the buildings. Most are smoking. Most are watching her. She's too fucking noticeable.
“Fine,” he grits out, cursing his agreement to let her come along.
His annoyance with her flares even hotter in the stairwell, as she pulls her arms in and makes a face at a stain on the third step that looks suspiciously like old, dried blood and he wants to ask what she's doing here. And not just here, physically in this building, tagging along and being annoying – what is she doing in the city pretending to be a psychic when she should be back in suburbia with a blonde, toothy husband and two-point-five kids and a golden retriever.
Or: Jon is a private investigator. Sansa is a fake psychic. They're going to solve crimes.
