Summary
After very publicly (some would argue theatrically) losing his mind and murdering three young women in an unconscious state, FBI consultant Will Graham is sentenced to serve three consecutive life sentences in the notorious Shawshank State Prison. Upon arrival, he is unsettled to find himself in a cell neighbouring that of infamous serial killer Dr Hannibal Lecter. Having already spent twelve years incarcerated, Dr Lecter has established a fearful reputation for himself inside the prison walls, and amuses himself by dealing in fine contraband.
When Will approaches Lecter with an unusual request, the two gradually strike up a friendship which, over the years, develops into a powerful infatuation that will change them both irreversibly. But prison is no fairy-tale world, and there are dangers lurking around every corner - the violent captain of the guards, Jack Crawford; the scheming warden, Frederick Chilton; and the brutal gang known as the Sisters, led by the murderer Francis Dolarhyde.
And then there is the secret which Will is hiding in his cell. A secret which, sooner or later, will change everything.

Summary
“I know what you are," Will tells him. "You’re the Ripper. I see you."
A long pause, and then Hannibal very carefully says, “You shouldn’t speak of such things. I dread the thought of you and calamity meeting under inconspicuous circumstance.”
Will steps forward into Hannibal’s space; he eases down to his knees in front of him, but never breaks eye contact, and it doesn’t hurt to look at Hannibal. It’s like looking into a carnival mirror; they’re the same, but different. “That isn’t a denial."
Hannibal takes a deep breath. He reaches out and brushes his fingers along Will’s cheek. His hand is trembling. “Does the lamb come so freely to the slaughter?”

Summary
There are certain rules to follow when working for Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. Under no circumstances are you to engage any of the inmates in personal conversation, put yourself in a position where they can cause you serious injury, or let them get inside your head.
Despite Will Graham’s best efforts he has managed to ignore all the rules as the new Orderly at the hospital and found himself the centre of fascination for the worst of the inmates, the Cannibal known as Hannibal Lecter.

Will smiled a humorless smile. “Are you trying to psychoanalyse me Doctor? Are you missing the good old days of psychiatry?”
Hannibal gripped the bars of the cell, fingers tightening like he wanted to prise them apart to be on the same side as Will. “I want to know you, Will. Don’t you want to know me too?”
Will swallowed down the spike of fear at his words. “No. I don’t find you all that interesting.”
Hannibal’s answering smile was all teeth. “You will.”
