“Are you nervous?” she whispers, looking at him out of the corner of her eye as he scans the crowd for her parents. The number of Suli people here is larger than the number at Fifth Harbour, and it has been almost a year since he last saw them; she does not blame him for having to look.
And, maybe, her gaze being magnified to them every time she spots them in a crowd is something reserved for her, anyway.
“Is my tie straight?” he asks, which means yes. It was the same thing he said in Ketterdam, and he had confessed later, a little breathlessly as they laid together in his bed, that he had been nervous enough to shake.
She turns, and straightens it for him, taking it in hand herself. Then, she taps his cheek once, quickly, and turns back towards the harbour. “It’s perfect.”

It was less of an emotional thing, and more of a logical one, at first. She trusted him. If she was in danger, Kaz would always come back for her, always fight her out. She was a part of his crew. Gradually, it became an acknowledgement of the bond that the two shared, the unspoken promises that were left taut between them.Inej will always come back to Kaz, no matter what. Kaz will always fight for Inej, until his heart gives out.
