“Not going to lie, I expected some smart-mouthed quip out of you, after you’ve cheated me so long.” She says, glancing up at him over the clipboard, “You’re definitely in stage one right now. Nice change of pace from people going right into being angry or bargaining with me. Clogs up the system, y’know, and then they go get themselves stuck in the Space Between. I’m sure you’ve heard of ghosts. That’s how we get ghosts.”

Jesse can only nod, finally finding his voice a second later, “So you’re…”

“Death. The one and only.” She gives him a wry smile, “Were you expecting a hooded cloak and scythe?”

He laughs, and it might just come out a little hysterical.

    Summary

“Where’s your boy-toy?” Sam asks, barely five minutes into his visit.

“Sam,” Steve groans, exasperated and maybe a little scandalized. His rational mind is aware that Sam doesn’t know anything. He just said that because he and Bucky have a vaguely antagonistic friendship with its own set of complicated rules, one of which seems to be that they will never, in any situation other than explicitly life-threatening, call each other their actual names or anything else that can be construed as nice or affectionate.

It confuses Steve as often as it amuses him, but on this occasion, embarrassed shock overtakes both.

Sam slants him a narrow-eyed look that’s a little too knowing for comfort.

    “I see I’m not wrong.”

Steve turns on his heels and gracefully nopes out of that conversation.

    They’d be on Steve’s couch.

They’d probably be watching sports and drinking beer. Maybe Steve would get caught staring at the way Danny’s tongue touches the lip of his bottle, or maybe he’d pluck up the courage and lean over and press his own beer-cold mouth to the spot just under Danny’s ear and make Danny shiver, or maybe Danny would just look at him and Steve would know.

(Aka, five times Steve fantasizes about Danny.)

    Summary

Tall Guy’s partner adds, “Did you get a good look at him?” Will is pretty sure this other man is a Detective, but with the long-sleeved button-up, slacks and leather dress shoes he’s wearing, he looks more like an accountant. An accountant who bench presses tax forms, to be fair, like Captain America was scaled down in height but not in width, but still. The only thing that’s missing is the tie.

Or: A witness to a shooting in broad daylight is interviewed by a Detective and a Very Tall Guy. Hair routines become a topic of conversation.

    Summary

Steve Rogers’s patriotic eyebrows jump up. “Holy cow.”

That was not what Tony would have expected from Captain America. “‘Holy cow’? Did the history books mess up? Was your family actually from India and not Ireland?”

“Fuck off, Stark. I ain’t shitting on what comes out of your mouth, so you better leave my goddamn cows alone as well.”

Tony doesn’t know whether to feel awestruck or betrayed. “You,” he says and points at Rogers, “are nothing like I expected.”

“Sorry to be a fucking disappointment,” Rogers says with a scowl and pulls his ridiculous helmet on, covering the sleekly styled brown hair. It was astonishing how even Rogers’s golden hair had been false propaganda -- but of course the great America had wanted to present its figurehead as Aryan perfection in the time of eugenics. “Suit up, everyone. Let’s get this shit done.”
