Wei Wuxian must notice the time too, however; and luckily for Sizhui, who would never question Lan Wangji’s daily schedule, he says, “Lan Zhan! I thought your meetings were supposed to run late tonight!”

“Mn,” Lan Wangji nods his head in assent. “I ended them early.”

“Oh?” Wei Wuxian prompts, his voice laced with cheekiness. “I thought these were very, very important meetings, not to be interrupted by any means. I wonder what could have happened to make Hanguang-jun cut them short?”

Lan Wangji doesn’t rise to the bait. He simply turns his head to Sizhui and says, “I was informed that our son had come home.”

Sizhui’s eyes widen. His racing thoughts come to a shuddering halt, replaced by a blank haze, punctured only by the words, /our son/.

“Hanguang-jun…” he stammers, meeting Lan Wangji’s eyes. Lan Sizhui has been raised by this man since he was five years old. He has never been the stoic, unreadable persona that others perceive him to be. Sizhui has had a lot of practice reading his adoptive father’s facial expressions, and the soft, loving gaze that Lan Wangji lays on him is so loud and obvious that Sizhui’s knees feel weak, flattened by the depth of feeling directed towards him by those eyes.

“Sizhui,” comes Lan Wangji’s deep, measured voice, the voice that rocked Sizhui to sleep as a nightmare-ridden child, the voice which had reassured him and taught him and guided him throughout the past fifteen years—that voice is the best sound Sizhui has ever heard. It sounds unbearably soft as Lan Wangji says, “Welcome home, Sizhui. I have missed you.”

From his robes he withdrew a paper butterfly, setting it beside the bowl before looking up. “Sizhui. It was on this same day, many years ago, that you first met Lan Zhan.”

Senior Wei’s smile was fond. “We were at the market in Yiling, and you ran away from me to go hug Lan Zhan. He bought you a paper butterfly”—a finger grazed the butterfly lying on the table—“and then he ended up buying us lunch.” Another finger poked the bowl of soup. “He told you not to speak during meals, and you obeyed instantly, as if recognizing your future father.

“I had to hunt down the sect records to figure out what day that was. You can imagine how much work it was, combing through 13-year-old night hunt records! Lan Qiren took some convincing to even let me look at them. And once I figured out what day it was, I had to find a way to make sure you’d both have the time free.”

Senior Wei’s face grew even softer. “I just thought we should celebrate our first day as a family by spending it together.”

Sizhui had to blink rapidly against the wetness he could feel at the corners of his eyes. His heart was swelling in his chest and he felt almost like he would float away from the lightness. His father’s voice sounded just as affected when he gasped a quiet, “Wei Ying.”

Wei Wuxian looked almost shy as he glanced at Sizhui’s father, meeting the reaching hand with his own. Sizhui felt something break free in his chest, some last fear or reservation giving way in the face of Wei Wuxian’s sheer /love/, and he smiled.

    Summary

"Would I be allowed to remember him?" Lan Wangji asks, voice whisper soft. The specter seems to smile, tendrils of silky darkness curling closer. It feels like a gust of wind against his skin. Slowly it's face dips closer, and Lan Wangji is swallowed by the golden void of it's gaze.

"How could I be so heartless as to make you forget?"

Or another Reincarnation Au, the one where they live multiple lives and Lan Wangji loves Wei Ying through all of them.

Strong hands cup his face then, thumbs stroking a familiar pattern across his cheeks, soothing.

"Lan zhan, aren't you going to say something?" Wei Wuxian blinks with effort, turns full attention to his husband. He's gone several shades beyond pale, movements sluggish and slow.

"Mh." Lan Wangji makes a strangled noise, eyes flickering down to meet Wei Wuxian's. "What would you have me say?"

When Wei Ying breathes his breath rattles. Lan Wangji can hear his lungs struggling to inflate. It might be distracting if he could focus on anything other than the gentle thump of Wei Ying's heart beating against his knees.

"Something romantic of course!" Wei Wuxian is smiling that mischievous little smile he's kept since those early days in school, overbright blue eyes soft with adoration.

"About how I'm the love of your life, or how you'll always remember me or something." He says it like a half-joke, but it must have been the wrong thing to do because tears begin welling at the corner of Lan Wangji's eye.

"Oh, Lan Zhan i'm-" He's on the verge of apologizing when Lan Wangji leans in, so close their noses are brushing. And then he speaks, so tender and soft Wei Ying thinks he might be the one crying now.

"You are." Their foreheads bump. Lan wangji has never looked so heart broken. "And I will."

“I couldn’t /trust/ you!” Potter yelled, not sounding at all intimidated. At least Severus, from the bitter brilliance in Potter’s eyes, thought he was seeing some of the anger the boy had held back all year and not a complete failure of his own techniques. “I didn’t know you’d manage. I didn’t know if you would manage to get into the Chamber if I’d let you go down alone. And I didn’t have /time/ to come and find you even if I wanted to! Ginny was probably dying, probably dead! No, I don’t enjoy things like this, but I have to do them because there’s no one else /to/ do them!”

/And that/, Severus thought, some of his anger ebbing, /is the heart of the dilemma/.

“Mr. Potter,” he said, lowering his voice to the same firm but soft tone that had worked wonders in the past and sinking to one knee in front of the panting, wounded boy, “I understand you have spent most of your life alone.”

The boy jumped like a scalded cat, and stared at him.

“But you are no longer alone,” Severus continued. “I would rather that you come to me than risk your life. And Draco is bound by the Secrecy Spell. You can trust him to that extent.”

“I didn’t want to endanger his life,” Potter said stubbornly, the light glinting off his glasses, “or force him to choose between his father and me.”

Severus paused, but he had no idea what Potter’s last statement meant. Nor would he allow it to throw him off, however. “You endangered your own life without pause,” he said.

“Mine doesn’t matter to as many people. I don’t have parents.”

Severus’s breath caught. Potter just kept on looking at him, though, with no sign of how much he had betrayed.
