“I’m looking for work, Captain Blake.”

The man laughs, steps closer to her. She can see every freckle on his face now, the salt caught on his brow, the smell of rum permeating his skin.

The desperation, in how he holds himself.

Grief is coming off of him in waves lapping at their feet.

“Your hands are too soft. Hair too clean. Princess.

He comes to watch her dance every Friday.

They play her music, and dim the lights. A wisp of smoke curls in the air, and then she steps on the stage. The bar is all velvet and fantasies, and she melts into the scene with want already pooling in her belly.

    And he’s always there.

    He never speaks. Never moves.

But as soon as she steps on the stage, he sets his drink down and shifts to get a better view.

She’s the only one he watches dance, and because he does it with reverence, she dances for him.

    Summary

Clarke thought she successfully exiled herself from the mobster organization years ago. She's free, living a life of normalcy on her own terms, far away from the Blake estate. Except when unidentified threats target Clarke, she's roped back into the organization seemingly overnight. Coming back to this life doesn't only bring the blood and death that Clarke's been trying to avoid, but it means being face-to-face with the boss in charge of this organization and the man she left behind, Bellamy Blake.

Or, Clarke returns to the Blake's mob organization, reuniting with her former lover Bellamy and the ghosts she ran away from in the first place.

“My father killed yours for his beliefs.”

Dmitry’s blood turn to ice as he stops in his tracks. His heart jumps in his throat, beating so furiously he’s afraid he might throw up. When he turns around to face her again, it’s with a pale face and a ringing in his ears. He points one threatening finger at her as he walks toward her.

“If you weren’t a Grand Duchess…” he starts. He’s beaten people to a pulp for less, as a teenager. It really is only her blood, and her guard glaring daggers at the back of his head, that stops Dmitry from truly threatening her.

“I’d like to see you try,” she replies, her voice cold. Then she repeats, “My father killed yours for his beliefs. I want to pay you for yours.”

“What the fuck does that even mean?”

    “Are you the mechanic?”

He wiped his palm on his pant leg and held out his hand. “Dmitry. What’s the problem?”

“Anya,” she answered and shook his hand once.

    “What’s the problem?” he repeated.

    “The car broke down.”

“Clearly,” he smiled with closed lips and dimples popped out of his cheeks. “What’s the problem with it?” he said again.

“I don’t know, that’s your job to figure out.”

His eyebrows rose and he scoffed. She wasn’t sure why she was irritated— perhaps it was the heat or the fact that she had to hang out in a sketchy place by herself with a rude stranger. Or that he kept adjusting his suspenders.
