Summary
The tradition of fighting over of the Role of Deferent is the closest thing Witchers have to religion, and Lambert thinks the only thing more embarrassing than losing every time would be his brothers smelling the way he yearns for something more. The way the thought of them gets him hot under the collar and he wishes it was more than some stupid fucking ritual they do to keep Vesemir happy.

Roach glances over and nickers at him softly. “You and me, girl, we’ve got a hell of a job on our hands,” Jaskier whispers to her. “Don’t you worry, though. I’ll stick around for a bit. Help you out.”
Roach flicks an ear at him, and then goes back to her hay. Jaskier heaves a sigh. “Sometimes I feel so unappreciated.”

Eskel was not a delicate fae. If his fellow sprites were the petals of a blooming rose, he was the jagged thorns on the stem, unsightly but necessary. They tolerated him. He was the best at dealing with infestations of insects, his battered, well-built body could tolerate the pesticides sprayed on the flowerbeds enough to make it safe again and he could knock a goblin out in one punch. Not only that, but he was one of the few fairies left that could adjust his size to an impressive six inches tall. A veritable giant. He was a much-needed bastion against the dangers of the Outworld, the name the fairies gave to their own realm because of its existence on the periphery, and the human world.
The words “oh, that’s just Eskel” became a catchphrase that every generation repeated when he was near or did something peculiar. Just Eskel. Simple, ugly, utilitarian Eskel.
