    Bookmarker's Notes

this fic is an azutara/kazula classic, and for good reason, it is so well written in every sense of the word. some people may have problems eith aang's characterization but i implore you to stick it out to the end, as that plotline has a satisfying conclusion, and i really do think he's in character - you have to understand that this is from azula's point of view, and she doesn't like aang. aang doesn't like her either. this is caused both by their own bias, and their actions toward each other. aang always assumes the worst of azula, and azula always, well, lies to him, essentially proving him right. i know if you take it as face value, it can seem like aang slander, but katara always sticks up for him until just before the end, and even then it's still implied that they can rebuild their friendship now that aang and azula don't have all this anger between them.

ok so now that im finally done talking about the plotline complained about, i can talk about the Good Stuff. azula and katara's relationship in this is amazing. from their first exciting beginnings on ember island, to azula legally making katara her partner in the fire nation and threatening everyone who has a problem with it, to azula visiting the south pole and meeting katara's family and getting enamored in their culture and their traditions (katara makes azula a parka!), to them once again returning to the fire nation with their family, and tension and stress on what's to come, but still love for each other. i love how they're able to balance each other out, and though sacrifices are made, these ladies don't have to give up their ambitions to live their lives and i think that's wonderful. honestly, this may be a cliche, but they honestly bring out the best in each other. they also challenge each other's world views, and learn so much from each other...i know im probably being vague but honestly love story of a century man.

iroh & azula's father-daughter relationship growing over the years is also so sweet to watch, as is ursa & azula's. honestly the whole fire royal family...mwah. they're so well developed in this fic, and they all have scenes that will stick to you, even if they aren't perfect. iroh giving azula her own knife, fixing his mistake from years earlier in more ways than one, ursa always stealing the ties azula uses to tie up her sleeves while they're in a hug, honestly ursa in general is amazing in this fic, zuko and azula having a rocky relationship at first, him regretting not doing more for her, slouched over a table stressed with paperwork, feeling like he doesn't have a family in which azula responds he's always had her...and these moments are more toward the beginning of the fic! there are so many more i left out in the name of avoiding spoilers!

sokka & toph are also welcome occasional additions, and katara's family and people shine, particularly in the third half - kanna in particular is a favorite. her taking azula aside, talking to her not angry in the same way as katara's father was at first, but explaining the situation and telling azula honestly just how it is, azula promising she won't keep katara from her home - hakoda coming to understand azula is also a favorite of mine, a particular favorite scene is when sokka and hakoda get azula drunk before her wedding night, as is tradition 😌

the world building is also lovely and extensive. azula is obsessed with the fire nation's history and thus it doesn't feel out of place when she internally monologues about it, or explains when asked by a fellow character. when she gets to the south pole, we also learn so much of their traditions and culture, and we eat it up just like azula does. the only other atla fic i've seen so interesting and extensive with world building is probably ultranos' salt & ashes series.

azula's "redemption" is also amazing to see develop over the years, but i refuse to spoil it - you must read it yourself to really get it.

in conclusion, this fic is probably the best i've ever read in the atla fandom. even if you don't like azutara, i think you could probably find something to like about this fic, and at the very least appreciate kazula's development here. i usually don't read canon compliant fics, or in other words post war fics, avoiding lok and comics of course, but this fic absolutely opened my mind up a bit in welcome of them if even a quarter of them are as good as this. though, in my mind, this will always be my canon.

    Summary

Iroh is tired when he heads to his quarters to write a letter to the rest of his family in the Fire Nation. So tired, in fact, that he accidentally implies in it that the knife is meant for his niece and the doll for his nephew. Azula and Ursa don’t notice the mistake.

    Zuko, however, does.

    Summary

It was difficult to imagine Princess Ursa, a woman who moved with gentleness and grace, whose soft, shy smile lit up like a pearl under the moon, who delighted in a simple theatre play, doing anything as unseemly as murder. She sat poised and prim, offering him a sweet jasmine tea with a steady hand that had long since been washed any trace of blood.

'It is wonderful to see you again, Iroh. I would love to catch up.'

Twelve Imperial Firebenders guard the entrances to her quarters. They are comfortable, full of plush furnishings. It doesn't look like a prison cell. If Iroh hadn't just returned from the healer's ward where what remained of his brother lay, he wouldn't think this was a prison cell at all.
