Summary
A storm shrouds Jing Yuan’s shoulders. He smells like wind and lightning, like rain on a sunny day, like dark soil and the life that blooms from it. He smells like… like the Luofu, that very first time Dan Heng stepped into the sunlight, that very first time he beheld the world with his own eyes.
Saliva fills his mouth. His stomach churns now as it did back then, trepidation warring with a longing so sudden and fierce that Dan Heng can’t think of anything else. This feeling—it can’t be anything else.
But then Jing Yuan says, “It’s been a long time, old friend”—and the candlelight in Dan Heng’s chest hisses out.
—
Jing Yuan and Dan Feng weren't soulmates.
Jing Yuan and Dan Heng are.

Summary
"Cease your tears, Dan Heng. For as long as I am in your care, I won't let this affliction get the best of me."
"You can't promise that," Dan Heng said. He buried his face in Jing Yuan's shoulder, breathing in his scent, committing it to memory. "You don't know that."
"But I do," Jing Yuan said. "Didn't you hear? They call me the Divine Foresight at Xianzhou. So, allow me to give this piece of foresight to you: when I do leave this mortal world, it will not happen on this train, when I am still under your care. That, I can promise you."
-
Freeing Dan Heng from the shadow of Dan Feng turns out to be far more complicated than just signing a pardon. Or: Jing Yuan takes a long-earned vacation amongst the stars, Dan Heng has an identity crisis, and Yanqing finally gets to wrangle criminals within his own paygrade.Bookmarked by heidi_mayer

Summary
"I just—didn't know where else to go." He has a troubled look on his face, as if hesitant to admit the truth. "I just wanted to be alone for a moment, I guess."
"You should have known I would be here," Alhaitham retorts.
"Maybe I was hoping you wouldn't be."
"I don't think you were."

Summary
"...I see," Kaveh said, with a sad smile. "The most comfortable company I've managed to find in the world is a tree. Mayhaps I should accept that I am indeed crazy."
He said that, but he took the invitation and stepped into the branches, lifted comfortably off of the ground.
"I'm Kaveh," he introduced himself. "An architect and artist. A sick and starving one. Whatever you are, you've been a great comfort to me and I owe you thanks."
Looking back, Alhaitham is sure that introduction would have been very different if Kaveh had known Alhaitham would eventually speak back to him.

Summary
"He'll tell you that your hair falling in your face as you drafted projects over the table made him want to brush some behind your ear, just to have an excuse touch you. He's romantic, but it's all fantasy."
"It could be real," Kaveh retorts without thinking.
"Could it?" Alhaitham grunts a skeptical noise that makes Kaveh's stomach swoop alongside its cadence. "But it's not what you want, is it."
...
Kaveh may or may not have a thing for voices. Alhaitham may or may not set the bar.
