I read this fic for the first time many months ago, when I first discovered Athelstan/Ragnar. I find that I keep returning to this fic so I can bask in the warm glow of this shared moment between our two protagonists.

I love the idea of Athelstan having his own little cabin by the sea. He is near enough to Ragnar that he can visit whenever he likes. There's always something about that touch to the lover's back when the reader is not sure whether the character knows the other is there. I have seen it done in other ships (00Q specifically) and I was pleased to experience the same level of emotion here.

This fic has all the intimacy of a much longer fic where their physical relationship is consummated, and more. Their conversation and the little touch of a kiss as they fall asleep makes this fic a standout in a sea of bawdier fics. The explanation of dolphins is so lovely. The details of their characterizations and Athelstan's calling Ragnar a 'legend' is what keeps me returning to this fic again and again. I can't help but feel the warmth that exudes from it.

The last line is the icing on the cake. It caps the emotion in this stunningly beautiful fic.

A reader in search of comfort should probably avoid Major Character Death fics, but I knew your writing well enough to hit this fic when I was in the right mood- and holy shit was I rewarded!

This little epic is chock full of ridiculously hot smut. Imagine me biting down on the palm of my hand as I read through each of Athelstan's encounters with his send-off party.

There is emotion in this fic, as Athelstan says his goodbyes to his Kattegat family and friends- maybe just enough emotion to keep this fic on the rails and away from what could have turned out to be so cracky.

The premise is right there in the show, when we see Earl Haraldson's slave face her harem of men who want to send their good wishes to their departed chieftan. I scratch my head and wonder why there were not more gang bangs written from this prompt when fandom was young? In any case, the story is in your talented hands as you send us on a wild time with our once-naive monk.

And the result is red-hot madness! A MCD fic that begs to be read over and over again - quite a feat when you consider the need for fix-it in this fandom after the events of 3:6.

A return to emotion takes over the fic's ending. We know fully well what is going to happen when Athelstan enters the trance-like state and visits the angel of death. Even this knowing, was not enough to make me contain my tears.

Discovering a fic like this, after binge-watching this show over the summer... "Joy has never felt this wondrous."

I remember last summer when I was a new Vikings fan. I reached this fic early in my journey of reading every athelnar fic, which I began reading sometime after Season 1, Episode 5. I had not yet seen Sacrifice. I saved it to savor after I had metered out my tiny parcel of one Vikings episode per week. When I finally permitted myself to read "A Time of Fortune," I knew my decision was a wise one.

This is an absolutely brilliant missing-scene take on how Athelstan got that cross wrapped around his wrist that we see at the crux of "Sacrifice." I love this ficlet and have read it several dozen times since seeing the episode. This fandom was made for fics like this.

Fics like this are the reason for my utter disappointment that I did not find this fandom when it was in its heyday.

This fic takes the reader back to the wildly innocent days at the end of season 1, before the dreadful event of 3:6. It is fascinating to look at Floki through this author's untarnished eyes. He is a friend to Athelstan and a confidant. This is as refreshing to read, six years later, as it was the day it was posted- maybe more so because it makes the brand new Vikings fan yearn for the days when the unknown could be anticipated with exquisite joy as much as trepidation.

Athelstan is written beautifully in this, although his inaction is maddening. This draws the reader closer to him. When things are not spelled out, we are not guided in how to react to his characterization, we are left to develop our own impression of him and this is what works so well in the fic. There is a quality of eerieness about his sitting on the freezing Kattegat dock night after night.

His grief over Gyda and Leif, when voiced, is heartbreaking and palpable.

The author resolves this grief with a stunningly physical sex session between Ragnar and Athelstan. The physicality of this coupling is among the best I have even encountered in any fandom:

"Ragnar rose up on his knees, taking the lower half of Athelstan with him. He was bruising, punishing in his pace, but Athelstan took it all. Elbows sore, he dropped back down, heedless of the angle on his neck. His hands sought and found Ragnar’s legs and he held on as the heat built into a blaze and the blaze swept through him like lightning.

Then he was wet all over, patched in hot stickiness and limp as a dolly. Ragnar’s hold switched to his hips and the final thrusts were so hard that his shoulders slid back and forth across the floor. The man’s eyes closed. His teeth bared in a grimace. When his head fell back and a deep growl of satisfaction passed his lips, Athelstan breathed his name."

You can actually feel the scrape of wooden floor digging into the back of your shoulders. Top notch writing.

    Bookmarked, recommended, and commented on:

There's no reason for the Major Character Death flag to sway a reader from reading this gorgeous fic because "Everlasting" is a masterpiece that fully lives up to its "fix-it" tag. I have read this fic a dozen times (or more!) over the past year. I simply cannot make it through to the end without crying. If I make it most of the way, the part where Ragnar reunites with Gyda does the job and I just lose it!

There is not one word out of place in this gorgeous fic, not one emotion that does not keep with the ethereal quality of the writing. It is pure magic:

    "In his dreams, light exists.

Beautiful laughter, fierce intelligence, a man made of strength that far surpassed his own. And yet that same man is one of gentleness, unrivaled sincerity and kindness.

Was. Is. He doesn’t know which. But when a hand bearing a round, ragged scar rests on his chest and dark hair spills over his arm and there’s a warm, tiny man curled against his body… his heart beats."

I daresay, it is sacred poetry. A reader would have to be inhuman to not literally feel this fic from the top of their head to the tips of their toes.

In the end, Ragnar welcomes his death and the glory that is Valhalla. His pain from the loss of "the one thing that means anything" is bone deep when you consider the joy he should feel at being reunited with his lost loved ones. Instead, he tells Athelstan, "I would still have chosen you."

Oh, my heart! Such is the unimaginable depth of his love for Athelstan!

"A hand. Someone taking hold, weaving fingers through his and he squeezes tightly, whispering prayers to all gods that he'll no longer have to be alone." I hope that, when the time comes, my own death can be as rewarding as Ragnar's in this fic.

Amazing writing. Definitely in the top 10 of all the Vikings fics I have read!
