She's five, when she finds the wolf cub in the woods, bleeding and crying, black fur wet and sticky with his blood, leaving red smears on her fingers when she picks him up. He trembles against her, and he's almost too heavy for her small arms to carry, but she does so, determined, cradling him close to her chest, careful.
Her mother's lip curls when she sees the creature. “Leave it to die, Clarke. Or better yet, put it out of its misery. That's one less beast in these woods.”
Clarke juts out her jaw and shakes her head, holding the cub a little closer. She's not going to leave him; she's going to save him.

Fall leaves and just a few stars speckled on the pitch-black sky; she should’ve lost her V-card tonight — at least that’s what she had decided. But that kind of planning never works, so instead of making out with Finn against some wall at the party, Clarke’s walking with hurried steps towards her best friend’s truck, dressed as the “cool” version of Sandy Olsson.
“Hey Sandy,” Bellamy greets her, hanging out of the open window as a wide grin spreads across his face. “Wanna go for a ride?”

He seemed at war with himself for a moment and then circled his warm fingers around her wrist and lifted her left arm closer to his eyes. Her compass sat right above her wrist, a glass sphere covering a light brown dial and a thin bronze needle. The needle seemed to be sitting slightly lower at the tip, nose not moving from the bronze embossed N letter. It didn’t move from there, no matter how much he turned her wrist around.
“Curious,” he muttered and tapped gently on the glass to try and get the needle moving.
