It would be ridiculous to call them friends. Like claiming two tigers were companions only because their stripes look similar at a glance. Ghost Kings don’t have friends.

“You’re going to choke to death if you eat like that,” Hua Cheng remarks.

He mostly sounds bored but also a little like he’s curious to see what will happen. He Xuan scowls at him and sops up gravy with the last of his carp, a futile little shovel chasing the rain.

“Weren’t you a scholar?” Hua Cheng asks. “I thought they fed you better.”

    “Than what?” He Xuan grumbles.

He doesn’t bother pointing out that he never passed the national exam to be appointed to any worthy position. He’s fairly sure Hua Cheng already knows about that, the same way he knows everything.

“Soldiers,” Hua Cheng offers with a shrug. “Street rats. Feral dogs?”

He makes a gesture with his left hand that encompasses all of He Xuan and earns himself another glare in response.

    There are wondrous things.
    There are magical things.
    There are terrible things.
    We get what we deserve.

The Shimada clan made a deal with creatures they could not begin to comprehend, and who made no effort to comprehend them. It was bound to break badly.
