    Summary

Our encounters often began in the sitting room and ended in Holmes’ bed, if not on the sofa or the rug or, on one memorable occasion, atop the dining table, but I never allowed myself to fall asleep beside him after that first night. I knew that my inevitable nightmares would reveal the true state of my damaged mind to Holmes, the last person alive to whom I would wish to display my weakness, and I feared what I might divulge in the haze of sleep. The fact that he never invited me to remain made clear to me that in any case he preferred to sleep alone. I would retreat to my own bedroom, still dazed from the agonising bliss of my release, the sound of his lust-filled voice echoing in my head, and inhale the scent of his skin on my hands as I drifted off to sleep.

Dr John Watson returns from Afghanistan to Victorian London, wounded, traumatised and alone. When he meets Sherlock Holmes, his life begins to seem worth living again. But Holmes is a man who despises sentiment and Watson cannot seem to expunge it from his heart.

    Summary

Yet there is one account above all others which I have censored quite shamefully, willfully, and without an honourable motivation — nor with any particular grace. In my defence, it was not entirely unnecessary, and at the time I was both inexperienced in the field of biography and lacking the honour of Mr Holmes's blunt perspective. I refer, of course, to the case of Mr Jonathan Small and the Agra treasure, the case I entitled, 'The Sign of the Four'.

    Summary

Watson should not have been surprised that Holmes rejected him.

Because, he'd thought, how in the world could a bird such as you, magnificent, brave, bright and beautiful ever love a mere fish like myself? The slow, dull, limited creature you've chosen to sing your song to?
