High school is hard enough to go through without needing to keep track of changes from a radioactive spider-bite. Peter needs to get his head round the fact that he has Tony Stark on his side and in his life - mistakes are made, but that's ok, they're there to learn from.
Not that Peter Parker was likely to learn any time soon to ask for help when he thought he might need it, nor to recognise when he needed it, but oh well.

Peter hates Greasy Pete’s.
He hates the smell of the food, stomach twisting itself into knots and making him queasy— from hunger and from revulsion in equal measure. He hates the customers, who are shitty at best and actively horrible at worst. He hates waking up before the sunrise every day, shivering in his apartment because even if he has a job now that can help pay his rent, it’s barely enough to cover anything else— all the blankets and clothes that he owns still not being enough to keep him warm.
Most of all, Peter thinks he just hates Greasy Pete’s because of what it stands for— a routine and a schedule that Peter doesn’t really want to have because he doesn't want much of anything anymore.

Summary
Technically, no one was supposed to be left alone, especially while they were actually open to potential adopters. Realistically, the shelter didn’t have enough volunteers and didn’t have the budget to hire more staff to make sure that actually happened.
Will didn’t mind working alone. He’d been accused of preferring it and he hadn’t argued because it wasn’t necessarily untrue. Still, he didn’t mind it and he’d offered to work alone when necessary to allow the coverage when people were working who did prefer to have someone else around.
Which was why he was alone in the back, cleaning out kennels, when he heard the chime that someone had entered the front area. He cursed softly, but without feeling. Even he could admit that it was a good thing for people to come by the shelter. None of the animals could find forever homes if no one stopped by to meet them.
He set aside his bucket and peeled off the gloves as he headed back up the aisles and through the door to the front. Where he only missed half a breath as he took in the man looking over the posters and flyers around the entry area. He’d completely regained his composure before the man looked up.
