Steve is babysitting Holly, perfectly holding it together until he isn't.

“Can I have some money please!” She begs, pointing at the machine displaying the temporary tattoos for two quarters.
Steve is too much of a marshmallow to say no. He just digs in his pocket and hands over two shiny quarters. She gives an excited squeal and puts them into their slots, turning the dial to the tattoo sheet she wants. Steve is a little surprised when she picks a sheet with skulls and bats instead of the ones full of ponies or butterflies. She pushes the quarters in the machine, clicking as it takes the money and pushes out a sheet of tattoos with thin cardboard on either side protecting it.

Summary
Steve pops open the trunk to reveal a long rectangular box neatly wrapped with bright blue paper and a yellow bow stuck to one of the corners of it. It’s early evening, Fall is on its way in and there’s a light breeze. They’re standing outside of the Byers house and there’s a birthday party going on inside. On top of the box is a blue envelope with ‘Shitbird’ printed and obnoxiously underlined twice in neat, but bold handwriting on it.
Max pauses and looks from the envelope to Steve with a look of hard confusion sliding onto her face.
Steve looks like he doesn’t know what to say and he’s staring at the envelope as well. Max would have lost her patience if not for how sad his eyes looked. He takes a moment to blink and wet his lips before he begins “B-He…he picked this up. Like, a month or so… before everything happened… He left it at my place for safekeeping. I thought I should give it to you for him…”

Steve runs out of the house with conditioner still in his hair to save the day only to learn the "code red" is that Eddie Munson is being a little shit and doesn't want to go to his graduation ceremony tomorrow. Steve's going to kill them both.
Or:
Steve convinces Eddie to go to graduation and ends up regretting the decision when Eddie shows up looking better than ever, sending Steve into a major sexuality crisis. And more fun ensues!
