If this man lives— which Ed has no intention of allowing to happen— he could start a whole fresh horror story, could tour the seas telling this brand-new tale about Blackbeard’s specific brand of savage violence. This time, it would even be entirely fucking true.
This time, it won’t be Izzy that kills a man for him, or the flames of a fire, or the blow of a fall. It won’t be committed from a distance, and it won’t be an experience-twice-removed, and it won’t be outsourced to somebody else. It won’t be an accident; it won’t be a legend; it won’t be a mistake, or an exaggeration, or just another myth that sailors tell each other for scares late at night.
It won’t be a technicality that kills the man that killed Stede Bonnet. It’ll be Ed.
or: ed and stede are ambushed, and ed thinks he sees stede die. he doesn't, of course, but ed doesn't know that.

Ed hasn't slept at all in the three days since Stede returned to The Revenge.
He can't let Stede know it's because he's afraid he'll wake up alone.
Ed heard about Stede's passing about a week ago, and he's not handled it well. Not that he's handled anything well in recent memory. But a visitor to the ship offers a different context to The News.
“They didn’t tell you who I was,” she says. “Mr. Frenchie was cagey about the introductions. For both of us.” Ed notices that he’s just Ed to her, but it’s Mr. Frenchie. There’s respect of nautical hierarchy for you.
He doesn’t know what to say back. She just stares at him, waiting for a response. Eventually, he goes, “I’m.” But he doesn’t know what name to give either.
“I know who you are,” she says, smiling with genuine warmth in her eyes. “You’re Ed.”
- Part 1 of When The Ship Comes In
The legends about Blackbeard run wild and wide. Tales of ferocious raids and blood-curling hauntings, of glowing eyes and a head made of nothing but smoke. But the most terrifying of all the rumors is this: he is a man without a soul. Without a daemon.
This, of course, is a complete fallacy. Edward has a daemon, same as anyone else.

Stede Bonnet is still not completely certain whether he sees ghosts or just visualizes figments of his guilty mind. But one thing that is for certain:
Stede Bonnet is home, and still he sees the man he left behind.
(aka: stede sees ed a la nigel, feels a shitload of guilt, and chases ed, both in that order and simultaneously; when he catches up there's a lot of talking the real ed and stede need to do)
