In a way, Juliette is sort of surprised that their first kiss in so long hasn’t shocked the life out of her, but if she's being honest, it’s probably because she’s been reliving their kisses all these years anyway. There’s no dizziness or fireworks rocking her off her feet, and none of those teenage emotions that made everything so much more heightened than it had to be. Instead, it just feels safe.
And the way she tastes. Fear, uncertainty, and a kind of innocence that Cal left in Savannah ten years ago. It all drips from her mouth now, tangy and sweet and reminiscent of a version of Juliette she never thought she would be again. Never thought she’d want to be again. This version of herself belongs to Cal, whether she knows it or not. Whether she wants it or not.

When Cal swings the door closed behind her at six thirty-two that evening, her darling girlfriend is perched on top of the fridge, hunched awkwardly to avoid hitting her head on the ceiling. The anatomy textbook lays abandoned in her lap while she fixes every ounce of her attention on a spot across the kitchen.
Julitte barely glances away when Cal drops her purse by the door, merely tossing a distracted “hi, honey” over her shoulder.
“Hi baby,” Cal says cautiously. “Whatcha doing on the fridge.”
