“Mother always liked you better,” she says quietly. She looks away from Zuko, lip beginning to curl again. “No wonder you’re so determined to believe that she’s alive.”
“Mother loved you, too,” Zuko says, and even he knows how weak that sounds. Azula throws her head back and laughs, but it comes out all wrong and hoarse and raw as though she’s strained her throat.
“Oh, Zuzu.” Azula walks forward, abruptly throwing her hands up against the bars of the cell. Zuko refuses to flinch as she leans forward. “I don’t know how you’ve survived this long if you still believe that.”

Summary
A direct sequel to. "What we lost."
Zuko and Mai are now living a happy life in the earth kingdom as bounty hunters.
They are living their best life, are very much in love, and are deeply enjoying their newfound freedom.
What could possibly screw this up? Well, one day the unexpected happens and the Avatar returns after all.
An opportunity presents itself for Zuko. He can end his banishment after all. Mai though doesn't want to say goodbye to their happy life as bounty hunters. And then there is the fact that the Avatar might not even be the old nasty man Zuko thought he was.
Things get complicated.

Mai grabbed a throwing knife off of the belt around her waist and flung the door open, ready to eviscerate whatever lay on the other side. And then stopped short.
It was the Avatar.
"Thank goodness," he panted. "If you hadn't come in the next three knocks, I was going to break into your bedroom window.
"Avatar Aang." She gave a long-suffering sigh. "What is so urgent it couldn't wait until morning?"
If he had woken her up to fight against insurrectionists, she would have some choice words for him.
"Zuko is dying."
