“Of course, I remember it,” she spits out. “You humiliated me. Mr. Philips tortured me.”
“Yes,” he says, apology clear in his voice. “I just wanted to say that your hair has never been the colour of carrots.” There’s a silence, and he can’t help it when he leans forwards, looping one of her locks of hair around his finger. It’s soft, and such a vivid red that he wonders how he ever could’ve been so foolish to call her carrots; it’s the colour of everything he’s ever loved in the world, reminds him of the colour his dad’s nose would go in the winter and the setting sun.
Anne’s simply staring up at him with wide, shocked eyes and he can’t say those things to her, can’t tell her such things. So, he simply finishes with, “It’s pretty.”

Gilbert Blythe only returns to Avonlea when he is 23, unexpecting of anything except a general feeling of returning home. Falling back in love with a girl he left behind seven years ago was definitely not in the cards.

Anne swallows, so hard that it hurts. His head is bent over her hand, and she suddenly realizes that with all the growing he’s done in the past year or so the top of his head is an uncommon sight for her. In fact, the last time she saw those dark curls from this vantage point was when he bowed after their dance practice at school.
She nearly flinches away from memories of that golden afternoon, when Gilbert’s eyes never left hers, when she was only vaguely aware of anyone else being in the room, when he pulled her closer than the dance required but it still wasn’t close enough.

“Oh, I’m so sorry miss – honestly I wasn’t paying any attention – and oh look, you dropped your – here let me – is there any way I can-” He might be a man now, but he still stammers and rambles when he’s embarrassed, head still bent as he tries to shake the dirt off her novel. She smirks at the sight.“Why, Mr Blythe, are all the Parisians as clumsy as you are?” Anne is relieved by the steadiness of her voice, even though her heart is thumping in her chest and her mind is whirling with questions as to why he is back, why now.
Gilbert goes to Paris, Anne goes to Queens, and years later they both return to Avonlea and meet again. They should be older and wiser, but when neither of ever admits to their mistakes and misunderstandings, will they ever sort themselves out?
