"O, isn't this what my mother never wanted?" - Analicia Sotelo, 'South Texas Persephone'.
Tom Riddle was not the only strange child to come out of Wool's. After eleven years of self-imposed exile, Amy Benson returns to Hogwarts to protect the only thing that matters: her precocious daughter, Mae. Offered the position of Potions Master, her alma mater seems like the safest place to keep Mae away from the darker elements of their world. But the wizarding world of 1957 is not the one Amy remembers, and while the threat of war may be over, she quickly discovers that peace in magical Britain is far from assured. As a radical new faction led by a charismatic Tom Gaunt rises to power in the Ministry, and a rapidly expanding Hogwarts braces for a post-war generation determined to leave its mark, Amy and Mae find that the secrets they keep for and from one another may be their undoing.

In the aftermath of the War of the Ninepenny Kings, Branda Stark, daughter of a mountain clanswoman and a wandering wolf, finds herself wedding a relatively minor lord of the Stormlands, while her younger sister is betrothed to their cousin Rickard, heir to Winterfell. While Branda finds love in her 'lesser' match, taking up residence at the mysterious Amberly, Aerys Targaryen takes the throne, Rickard Stark begins to dream of a southern alliance, and Branda's adventurous children, always in the shadow of their prideful cousins, find themselves scattered across a realm edging closer and closer to civil war.

Her parents said she was precocious, whatever that means. You think it’s just a way of saying she’s very smart for her age, and a little weird, and it makes adults think she’s mature, but she’s still just a kid, after all.
“Why is everyone leaving?” she asks.
You see little point in lying to her. “They’re scared people are going to come down from the highway after their cars stall out.”
She frowns. “Are they?”
“Maybe,” you say. But we have to stay here, you think, because there’s nowhere else to go.
(Lee goes, Sandra lives, the Greenes reluctantly make space for a little girl and her babysitter, and the apocalypse settles in at a slow broil instead of a tidal wave)

It’s not as though she never gets him gifts or suggests date nights, but it’s easy to feel a bit insecure when your romantic competition (in your own relationship, no less) is a three hundred year old vampire who can quote love poetry in half a dozen different languages, has already memorized all your favorite films and songs, and knows how to cook all your favorite meals, even the ones that required him asking your far from approachable mother about.
Which is why for Valentine’s, she had to cut him off at the pass.
(In which Detective Holly Lin's attempts to surprise Nate with a romantic evening don't go according to plan. At all.)
