Summary
"Will you keep your fancy clothes on, for me? / Can you bear a little longer to wear that leash? / My love, I swear by the air I breathe: / Sooner or later, you'll bare your teeth." - Joanna Newsom, "Monkey & Bear".
He does not have to question if she recognizes him or not. For a few moments he thinks she is debating turning on her heel and fleeing into the crowd. Then he watches her face transform from an uncertain young woman of twenty four, to something resembling the tenacious, take-no-prisoners ambulance driver who saved his life. She squares her shoulders, marches forward, suitcase in hand. Crams her hat under her armpit to free a hand to outstretch to him.
“Mr. Shelby,” she says. Her gloves, he notes, are brand new, possibly the most expensive item on her, which isn’t saying much. Spotless white. His hands are clean, but he can’t help but feel he’s marring them all the same. “Thank you for the tickets. And the letter.”
“Mrs. Shelby,” he says, which a better-humored man might have managed to make sound like a playful joke. At best, it sounds like a judge pronouncing a prison sentence. A life term.

"You survived because of me."
"It wasn't worth it."
She has to remember that. Right now she is grieving and in shock and it’s gonna be real easy for her to start feeling all grateful and sweet they’re not chopping her up to eat her or chaining her up like a dog. It’s gonna be real easy to forget what they did. Maybe not with Joel, because he’s a bastard, but with the sweet talking little brother, yeah. And once you start feeling grateful, you start feeling guilty. She doesn’t do guilty. She did guilty with Aaron, with her family, her friends. The people she loved. They’re all dead now. The last of them were taken from her yesterday. And she needs to recall exactly who is to blame.
(During his time as a hunter, Joel meets a young woman named Hannah, captured by his group after the ambush and murder of her brother and friends. Twenty years later, he meets her again, transporting a mysterious girl out of the city.)

Summary
"No hope in the air, / No hope in the water, / Not even for me, / Your last serving daughter." - Laura Marling, 'Hope in the Air.'
Gwen brings to mind Quellon’s doomed reforms and the stares and gossip that followed him, once the most renowned and famed of all Ironborn, at the end of his life. How the mighty have fallen. Balon will be glad to be rid of her; once she’s married, she’s no longer his responsibility, even if she’s widowed. He doesn’t want to have to so much look at her again, not anymore than he did after the Rebellion, when she did nothing but weep and cling to his increasingly unhinged wife.
…The greenlanders were formed from clay and sand and mud, and once you dunk them in water, they crumble and drown. The Ironborn were forged from stone and steel; their God loves them so that He made them unbreakable, undaunted, undefeated. Except when they are defeated. And then He loves them a little less.
(In which Quellon's final child by his last wife, a stillborn daughter, survives.)

Summary
"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single woman in possession of a prodigious magical talent, must be in want of a husband."
In a world vaguely reminiscent of our own early 1800s, failed artist in residence Nancy Crane is recalled from her position at a finishing school in order to confront the engagement between her younger sister Alice, a soon to be acclaimed magician, and an ambitious baronet, Sir Thomas May. Suspicious of May’s motives and faced with whispers that he and a fringe group of rebels are plotting to overthrow the Princess Regent in favor of her dastardly nephew, Nancy attempts to uncover the truth about Sir Thomas and protect her family from both the vicious gossip of the Ton and sinister sorceries.

Summary
On the cartographer skiff, a parallel pillar of light shot into the void. At the bottom of it, someone knelt, head back, hands splayed like a stained glass scene of an old martyr. He watched, too perplexed to feel the pain in his lacerated neck and shoulder, and then saw the dead volcra falling from the sky. Any that touched the light died.
…The light began to wane. He caught a glimpse of the body’s trousers, tucked neatly into their black boots, shined as brightly as ever. He saw a pale, stick-like wrist, long, witchy fingers. He lowered the rifle and nearly retched. The light faded. He watched Alina sway, a delirious grin on her face, hands still outstretched as if waiting for her reward. When none was forthcoming, save a final dead volcra landing at her feet, she lurched forward as if to bow, and toppled.
(In which they never stopped calling Alina a ghost. It was never a compliment.)
