    Summary

"There is no part of Edward unmarked, untagged, unlabeled, unclaimed. The parts uncertain he has scribbled over himself; refusing his father’s name and then taking it back, finding his mother’s and holding on with white knuckles.

And even still, even now, after all he’s lost and won and rejected and earned, there are still pieces of himself he does not fully understand. Some days, he looks down at his mismatched hands and does not recognize the fingers attached to his wrists."

Or, the story of how Ed and Al lost their names and won them back again

    Summary

“Brother,” he says, dismayed. He reaches out to touch Ed’s hunched shoulder, to comfort him, to help him on his feet, to carry him bodily to the Rockbells’ house if he has to to make sure Ed will be okay—

—but his hand passes right through Ed instead.

(An AU in which Ed is eleven, terrified, in pain, and alone on that terrible night, and he doesn't think that some small scrap of Alphonse might be salvageable from the Gate. He crawls out of his house instead, thinking he's killed his little brother—and Alphonse's ghost is forced to watch the years pass him by, invisible and mute, trapped in the in-between and blaming himself for everything that's gone wrong.)

    Bookmarker's Notes

It's rare that a fic will make me cry. It's even rarer that a fic will make me literally sob. It is nearly impossible that the sobbing will be from how beautiful it is and not just from the emotions it invokes. The fact that this fic made the near-impossible happen is a testament to how fantastic it is. I'll be thinking about this for years, most likely.
