    Summary

Crowley goes too slow, Aziraphale drinks copious amounts of alcohol, and the bookshop is (very nearly) set on fire. Again.

    - - - -

"Aziraphale is not one to overindulge in alcohol.

Except for when the occasion really calls for it.

    And this one does.

    Because - because -

He wants Crowley. He wants his companionship. He wants him here, now. He wants Crowley - he wants. He wants-

Another glass of wine. By now he’s lost count.

Because Crowley is not here. Aziraphale could call him. He could, but - but. Aziraphale is in no state. Probably. And besides, Crowley cannot come. Not tonight, at least. Maybe never. Crowley drove off, after all. Maybe Aziraphale has waited too long. Maybe he’s gone too slow.

And this thought is painful enough to warrant another drink. Or three.

He’s drunk his way through a Chateau Pontet Bordeaux red blend, an Albert Mann pinot noir, the Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva, and half of the crystal encased Glenglassaugh whiskey by this point, and he’s fine. He is. Really. Even if the room has begun to sway around him."

Take into consideration: the Earth is a Libra. There are two sides to her cosmic scales, but they are almost never balanced. In theory, angels should be solidly on the right side, and demons should be definitively on the left. In practice, though, this isn’t quite true. Aziraphale adds the weight of Crowley’s gaze to his own set of scales and feels himself slipping.

(alternatively: aziraphale has been falling in love with crowley for 6000 years. not that he realizes it.)

“It’s just,” he continued, “I’ve noticed that humans—some humans, anyway—they use that word, angel, as a…well, as a sort of…endearment.”

“Do they?” said Crowley, who had invented using the word as an endearment in the 13th century AD.

Aziraphale tells Crowley about love, in so many beautiful words, phrases, entire stories. Aziraphale holds him close through sleepless nights, his aura soothing Crowley’s senses.

Crowley can’t deal with affection spelled out so explicitly, in gorgeous ways he can’t possibly match, so he stays silent, looking Aziraphale deep in the eyes, sometimes through his eyes right into his soul, painted in delicate hues of white and pink and blue.

    Summary

I’ve been seeing all these posts about how people are suddenly realizing how starved they are for happy endings as they try to understand why Good Omens took over their brains and hearts so fast and so utterly. It’s true; Good Omens takes the fucking Apocalypse and turns it into a story that genuinely makes you feel good about the world and people and love, which is some trick, and definitely something that should be recognized and applauded.

I would like to briefly suggest something else that I’m pretty sure is going on here for me, and may partly explain the emotional impact of this storyline for some other people: that the whole Azirapahle & Crowley plot (put a / there if you want! For me they are both!) is a reworking, on a scale simultaneously cosmic and intimate, of a story that fascinates all of us who have been subjected to binary divisions: the reintegration of the split subject.

[Before we move on: I was not aware, when I wrote this, that Neil Gaiman has apparently said that originally GO was intended to have a single protagonist but then they decided to have two. I am now, though.]

Crowley reaches up to touch the painting, to brush his fingertips along the lithe form of the woman’s bare arm, down the curve of her hip. He hums noncommittally.

“You looked so lovely that day,” Aziraphale says, slipping an arm around Crowley’s waist and leaning his head against Crowley’s shoulder. Warmth seeps into Crowley everywhere they touch. “Of course, I always think you’re lovely.”

"My dear." Aziraphale looked uncomfortable. "Did you know that we have rather too much in common?"

Crowley gave Aziraphale a puzzled look and gestured with the wine bottle. "I didn't think you'd had enough yet...?"

"Of course not. Top me off." Crowley did so. "It's just," Aziraphale huffed. "I've given it some thought, you know. I'm an angel and you're a demon."

Crowley didn't appear to have any "aha" moments, so Aziraphale continued. "We shouldn't have anything in common," he blurted.

    Aziraphale wasn’t panicking.
Angels did not panic. That was strictly what humans did (and alarmingly often.)
No, Aziraphale was simply calmly worried, and there was a distinct difference.

Or, it's 16th century England, the Witchfinders are all out and about, shouting and much much worse, and Aziraphale knows their ideal kindling are those with unsubtle magical abilities, unconventional personalities, and, preferably, red hair.

And he just so happens to know a demon who, somehow, matches that very description.

    And he's not panicking.

    He's not.

“There is, apparently, an angel with a soulmate.”
Crowley’s expression was one of poorly-veiled amusement. “Uh oh. Reckon your lot weren’t too happy ‘bout that. Soulmates are supposed to be strictly for mortals, aren’t they?”
“Crowley.” Aziraphale’s voice was just on the side of testy. “The angel’s soulmate is a demon.”
Crowley’s face morphed from hilarity to understanding and finally to horror in a matter of seconds. “Oh,” he said. His eyes met Aziraphale’s from behind his designer sunglasses. “Oh."

“Oh, come now,” Crawly purred. “That’s hardly enough of a look.” Feeling emboldened by the angel’s general lack of smiting, he elbowed him gently. It earned him a surprised but not entirely unpleasant look. “Have you been down there yourself?”

“Er, briefly, yes,” Aziraphale admitted. “To give the humans… well.” He made a little motion with his right hand, flattening the palm and moving it up and down. Crawly raised an eyebrow in confusion. Aziraphale sighed. He glanced up, then back down, and quickly whispered, “The sword.”

“Ah,” Crawly said, as though he’d already forgotten. (He certainly hadn’t.) “Well, that was for business, not pleasure.” Aziraphale shot him a confused look out of the corner of his eye. Crawly didn’t really blame him. Business wasn’t a thing yet, after all, but Crawly was already cooking up some particularly devious ideas involving stocks and the crashing thereof.

For thousands of years, a demon has been falling in love with an angel. In the moments between scenes, he learns to trust it.

    He can’t do this.

“Can I—” he bursts, stops, overflows again. “Would it be too terribly forward of me to ask—”

This is so much. How can small words hold so much? Perhaps he can keep it in, after all. If the words can hold it, maybe he can too. Maybe he won’t crack and rupture.

Or: After the bus ride back from Tadfield and the erstwhile End of the World, Aziraphale reaches his breaking point.
