He’s had his Name for as long as he can remember. He knows he wasn’t born with it, but he doesn’t care. It doesn’t matter. Those letters are his, and they are perfect. He can feel them in his bones and in his mind. They're his, and somewhere someday he's going to glimpse the face that goes with them. Some day he'll see G-a-r-r-e-t-t written neat-as-you-please on someone else's skin and he'll know.
Except it's not quite that simple, not hardly.
He should have known better than to believe in fairy-tales
Hawke's getting tired. He's tired of all the death, all the fake smiles and the brave acts. He really just wants to sleep--he wants to be with his family again. The Arishok's invasion comes at a convenient time, and he feels like if he can see this through, he can leave his friends behind in good conscience. There's no reason to stay any longer.
In which Hawke is good at acting, and Fenris makes an arse of himself without meaning to.
As a young child, Hawke has a dream. He watches his little sister die at the hands of a terrifying monster, his mother cold in his arms, his world shattered at his feet. In most worlds, he wakes, shakes the nightmare and forgets it all as he cries into his mother's skirt in the early hours of the morning.
But in this world... he Wakes, opens himself and his magic to the fateways and seeks out all the ways to keep his family safe.
There's no going back, no forgetting, and no mistakes. One time counts for all.
