Summary
Now it just seemed like whenever Dani was within reach, Jamie’s hands were always reaching out for her. Playing with her hair, tapping out morse code I love yous on her shoulder, tangling their fingers together. Dani grounded her, in a way that even her plants couldn’t. Nature gave her contentment; Dani was sheer joy.
She squeezed Dani’s hand, felt an answering squeeze in return, and the pain abated for that one millisecond.

Summary
Hearts are strange and stupid creatures, anyways. They twist over and over again for every person they love, mould themselves into the initials of names, beat to the cadence of someone’s voice and find ways to survive even after cracking wide open. Hers didn’t need to know Jamie to decide it cared about her.
Two months later, it doesn’t need to ask for Dani’s permission to decide it’s already falling in love.

Summary
Dani didn’t walk into her life. She didn’t come in and carve out a space for herself. She didn’t need to. She waltzed over and fit, seamlessly. By the time Jamie opened the door, Dani was already on the other end, making Jamie’s songs, her stories, her life, her own. All of Jamie was already hers, by the time they found each other in the kitchen, behind the statue, in the woods. All of Jamie’s places, it seemed, already carried the imprints of Dani’s footsteps.
Still, it took her about a month after the breakup to press a fist to her chest, and feel the hollow space there, the utter lack of Dani’s name being repeated there every second.
How was anyone supposed to fall out of love with their whole heart?

Summary
Sterling looks at her, a little out of steam after her declaration, and April wants to laugh. She imagines pressing on that urge physically with her arms, throwing it onto the ground and stamping on it until it’s completely buried, as she so often must around Sterling. Sterling brings out the strangest feelings in her, feelings that are frustration, fury, amusement, and sometimes, only sometimes, almost soft. Fond-ish. Tender adjacent.
“The meaning,” her sister Blair says, stepping out from behind her, cloaked in darkness “is that in thirty days, she will stab you through the heart and you will die.”
(And there you go. All feelings except annoyance, gone)
“You do realize most duels end in the loser leaving town with stab injuries and not, you know, dying, right?”
“We thought it was more dramatic that way,” Sterling admits, sheepish.

Robin frowns, gives him an unimpressed look. Not really what she had been expecting, but better than being harassed. “Do I look like I know who your sister is?”
