Her hand pauses its ascent toward the door of the hotel room she’d convinced Jamie to spring for with the promise of joining her for the weekend — starting tomorrow night: the end-of-conference gala.
So Jamie’s surprise isn’t surprising. It’s the tightness in her voice, nearly but not entirely masked by a warm tone, that catches Dani off-guard.
When she looks down the hallway, she finds a shoeless Jamie grinning a bit too symmetrically, wearing a tank top and slacks with the suspenders hanging down and carrying a bucket of ice.
