Summary
On a rainy day, professor of Literature and aspiring author Stede Bonnet finds refugee in a small secondhand bookstore. Upon recommendation from Edward, the owner of the store, he brings home a big stack of books. Back home, he find that the books are annotated. Something about the notes makes him feel seen, understood. He can’t help but feel a connection between himself and the mysterious annotator.

At the same time, Staten Island is going through some extreme cold weather, and Guillermo is struggling to keep his lips from drying up. He ends up buying a flavored Coca Cola chapstick to prevent his lips from chapping up. Nandor goes for days trying to figure out where that new smell comes from - human food, but delicious? When he realises it's coming from Guillermo's lips he knows exactly what to do.
