“You are Zewu-Jun, who took over his sect at fifteen, has the audacity to marry two people without giving a shit what anyone else thinks, has mastered all the five arts, is a kind and gracious man, a generous lover, and would be worthy if the only thing you did was fucking exist on this planet.”
Jiang Cheng was ferocious in his fury. He wouldn’t let Xichen drop his gaze. His face was gently shaken, “Do you hear me? Do you hear what I am saying? The only thing you need to worry about is to be kind, and generous. Everything else is just set dressing, fakery and birth status.”
He sat back, looking vaguely shocked at himself. Yanli looked on, serenely approving.
“Holy shit,” Jiang Cheng whispered. “Fuck.”
He turned to Jiang Yanli. “Is this how you do it?” he demanded. “Is this how you’re always so nice to everybody?”
She smiled beatifically. “I channel my anger into being kind. I call it ruthless compassion.”
