“Go back to playing,” Jin Guangyao says hoarsely. “Don’t mind me. I just want to listen.”
Xichen gives him a small, unconvinced smile, and reseats himself at the piano. His eyes hover over the sheet music, but—he can’t quite begin where he left off. He glances back at A-Yao, wanting to say something, but knowing A-Yao will get to it in his own time, if he intends to tell Xichen at all. “Is there anything you’d like to hear?”
A-Yao, wine in hand, approaches the piano. He perches on the end of the bench, watching Xichen, trying to return his smile and assuage his concern. “Play something you think I would like.”

He reaches down to touch Xichen’s chin, and raises it, throwing the lines of his jaw and neck into striking relief. “Any man who does it should be happy.”
“But happiness is not a matter of should.”
“If I want something, I can have it. If I ask my men to escort the leader of a prominent sect to my rooms and bind his hands, they will do it.” Meng Yao crouches to bring himself level with Xichen’s gaze. His bare knees peek through the front of his robe. “What is happiness if not getting what you want?”
