Summary
The balcony becomes a refuge for them – when Lena inevitably works late, either at the office or at home, and Kara inevitably can’t sleep, they find themselves standing shoulder to shoulder, talking about everything and nothing, looking out at the city. It makes Lena feel both like they are the only two people in the world and like they’re part of something impossibly big.
But maybe that has nothing to do with the balconies, and everything to do with Kara.

“You can touch, you know.”
It takes Kara’s brain a couple of seconds to catch up, almost like a reboot. It’s like everything screeches to a halt, and there’s nothing but a low buzzing in her ears and on her skin and in her head. She finally manages to look up from Lena’s – from her collarbone, okay, Lena’s collarbone is just looking very attractive today – and into her eyes. Actually, she doesn’t think that’s much better. Now she’s just staring at that.
“I can – what?”
“You can touch,” Lena repeats, and is Kara having a stroke? Is she dreaming?

Kara doesn’t realize she whispered the pun under her breath until someone giggles softly behind her. She turns around, her heart beating a little faster from the shock, to meet the greenest eyes she’s ever seen. They’re shining in amusement, and Kara feels herself blush. Her heart is also not calming down like it should be by now. She thinks it’s because the face those eyes are a part of is so pretty.
“Sorry. Didn’t realize I was saying that out loud.”
“No complaints here,” the girl says, “I thought it was funny.”

Summary
The first time Kara kisses her, it is largely unimportant.
It happens simply enough: Kara’s mouth pressed to Lena’s cheek mid-pose for the group photo that Nia insists on taking during a particularly rowdy game night. In the grand scale of things, it barely even registers. Kara’s lips are there and gone in the time it takes for an iPhone camera shutter to open and close, and the only lasting reminder of it lives on Nia’s Instagram page, in a world of social media that Lena does not frequent.
She doesn’t really think about it.

The first time Clarke sees the Head Girl she’s sitting on a throne, presiding over her dominion with a piercing stare and a crown of braids in her hair. Her warriors are spread at her feet, a multitude of them, all long-haired and wild and clad in identical brown regalia. There’s something of the sacred about her, like the crimson cloak draped across her shoulders and her divinity are one and the same.
Or at least it feels that way.
