The Doctor and the Master wake up on a strange spaceship with four others, and are told they have to complete a series of trials to save planet Earth.
In one corner of her mind, the Doctor catalogued the sound of soft footsteps pacing nearby. They weren’t coming near her though, so she decided to leave them be for now. For the moment, she wanted to mope. And think. Really, what had she been doing? How did she get here?
The footsteps plodded closer to her, and something nudged her in the ribs. She groaned again and rolled over, opening her eyes at last.
“Oh, get lost,” she spat, closing them immediately again.
“Don’t be a bitch,” said the Master.
Jack dies, again, and the Doctor saves him.
This is the aftermath.
It was time to get up, perhaps. Groaning, creaking, he pulled himself to a sitting position, twisting around so that they were facing one another, cross-legged. “Thank you,” he said, as if it meant anything, as if she would ever accept it. Even though it was new, he knew the nooks and crannies of her face, the pain and tension wrought into it, the brittle facade of a weapon forged of resistant steel.
“Ah,” said the Doctor, on cue, “no need for that. What’s a bit of saving your life between friends?”
“Are we?” asked Jack. “Friends?”
“Oh,” she said, stricken. “Of course we are.”
The Doctor encourages Nardole to visit Missy and keep her company.
It goes about as well as could be expected.
The Doctor pats him on the hand. “Just – go and see her,” he says, “and talk to her. You know,” he grins wildly, an incongruous look on his normally frowny face, “perhaps you could make some music together.”
Nardole gasps. The audacity.
“Get to know her.”
Nardole shakes his head vigorously, feeling his cheeks wobble as he does. “Sir, this is deeply inappropriate. You can’t ask me to do this. It must violate every HR directive in the book.” Is the Doctor really asking him to sacrifice his virtue? To that woman? He draws himself together. “It’s immoral.”
“Nardole,” the Doctor cajoles, “she just needs some enrichment.”
There’s a dangerous beast lurking at the heart of Doncaster town. And no - it’s not the Council.
Fifteen minutes later they were all sitting together on the kerb outside the station.
“I cannot believe,” the Doctor said scornfully, “that I am in a town where the only thing they do is build trains, but I have to get a rail replacement bus service because of industrial action. This is just typical.”
Ryan shrugged. “Northern Rail.”
One day out of thousands, they can come together in the Vault and create something beautiful.
“Did you like it?” Missy asked.
“More of a Rachmaninoff guy myself, actually,” the Doctor said.
She twisted her head at this, fixing her gaze at him. “I don’t have the handspan for that these days and you know it.”
“Well maybe you should have thought about that when you regenerated.”

Crumpled at the base of Koi Tower’s long stairs for the second time, Jin Guangyao presses his face into the stone, takes a deep breath despite re-broken ribs, and arranges his features as carefully as he knows how. Then he stands, moving carefully around the pain, and bows deep, arms held straight and true. The walk back up the steps to his father's side is painful enough to wipe the smile from his face; it is not painful enough to prevent him re-taking his place as seneschal, bowing again at the top of the steps. As he straightens, he prioritizes his plans for his father’s demise over all else.

As soon as Aubrey Thyme, psychotherapist, had opened her office door and seen her new client, Anthony J. Crowley, sitting in her waiting area, she was observing and assessing him. At first glance, she paid attention to the following:
--His clothing was expensive and stylish;
--He wore very strange but noticeable cologne;
--His relationship to the seat he occupied could only, very loosely, be described as “sitting;”
--He looked angry;
--He was wearing sunglasses.
What Aubrey Thyme, a professional, thought, upon first seeing her new client was: you’re going to be a fun one, aren’t you?

When Wen Qing closes her eyes, she can see flashes from the night before. Rain and lightning and clouds of resentful energy. The huddled pool of A-Ning’s body. Wei Wuxian playing Chenqing, fey and dangerous, like a figure from a myth. Horrors and death and Hanguang-jun standing under a paper umbrella. She can hear the echoes too: screams from the sect overseers and from her own people mingled. Her desperate shouting. And the unearthly music of the flute.
Now they are in the Burial Mounds. The dirt here is fine as ash and dry as bone. Clouds of resentful energy swirl through the eerie forest. When they arrived, terrified and exhausted, they crept in through the trees like ghosts. But she lives, and so does A-Ning. And Wei Wuxian promised to heal him.
