Had it been anyone else, any other person looking at his body – stark naked but for the delicate scraps of silver satin and lace across his hips and backside – Nicky’s stomach would be tangled in knots of anxiety.

“I am the luckiest man in the world.” He swipes his pinky along the ridge of the mortar, touching the tip to Nicky’s tongue. “Do you taste that?”

“Tastes like harissa.” Nicky points out.

Joe shakes his head, kissing the corner of Nicky’s mouth, chasing the heat. “That is joy, vita mia, that is life and love.”

“All done,” Joe said with a bright smile as Nicky turned to face him, gripping his hands tightly together. “Should be spick and span. Want to do a walkthrough before I go?”

Nicky absolutely could not be in an enclosed space with this man. Just being in his airy kitchen with Joe was making Nicky perspire, sweat prickling at his hairline and under his arms. “I trust you,” Nicky said to cover himself. “Let me just get my checkbook and I’ll get you your payment.” Joe nodded, and Nicky took a few steps toward the threshold before coming to a stop. “Ah.”

    “Problem?” Joe asked, looking concerned.

Nicky huffed an embarrassed laugh, rubbing a hand over the back of his neck. “I’ve just realized,” he said shamefacedly. “I think I left my checkbook in my briefcase, which I left in my office for the long weekend.”

    Summary

Yusuf lets out a stuttered breath and pulls back to meet his eyes. Nicolò’s eyes were dark in the candlelight. He always looks breathtaking from this angle, looking up at him while pressed into his chest, the cupid’s bow of his mouth exaggerated and lashes casting a shadow onto his cheeks. Yusuf has never been able to resist dipping down and worshipping those lips with his own, demanding more, initiating something that would keep them awake for a little longer.

“Yusuf,” says Nicolò. “Yusuf, you don’t have to stop,” Nicolò says.

Yusuf looks at him, tracing his eyebrow with his thumb, smoothing his frown. “I’m alright, my love,” he says, and means it.

“My hands, my mouth, my ass–” Nicolò says, “– still work, you know.”

    ---

In which, Yusuf and Nicolò are stuck aboard the Sempre Verde, a 16th century Portuguese ship marooned in a freezing terrain, during a mission to transport refugees fleeing the inquisition. With their provision rapidly depleting, they are faced with difficult decisions, as well as inner demons named grief and guilt.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Thank you for your story, it is incredibly well-written and you managed perfectly to make us agonise with the characters. The depiction you made of their love was perfect to me, I don't have the words for what the scenes in the ice some made me feel. And Ennio was a nice addition, I really hope he gets his ship someday! Thanks again!

"Haven't you ever considered that the problem with all of your past relationships was that they were with women?"

And just like that, Nicky's turbulent mind goes entirely, perfectly blank.
