    Summary

Beatrice finds herself musing not over duty and sacrifice and God, but the truth of angels, if they can be created rather than summoned. If they can take the form of women with overeager mouths and careless limbs and eyes with a depth that beckons - a crooked finger, a spiral staircase - if they can be both human and not, both beautiful and terrifying.

Ava asks, What do you want, Beatrice?

(Tell me and I’ll give it to you. Tell me and I’ll build you a home there. Tell me and I’ll rearrange the universe to make it all fit, angels and demons be damned. Tell me it’s me. Me. Me.)

'But now Beatrice prays, the portal sitting silent behind her, having just taken her love somewhere Beatrice will never be able to follow. She prays for Ava; for her safety and her health; for her joy and her freedom. She prays for her other sister warriors, depleted in numbers as they are, continuing to stand and be counted. She prays for the world; prays for their good sense and their salvation.
    Then she prays for herself.'

    Summary

“Look,” Beatrice snapped, the agitation finally breaking through her calm exterior. “I’m not a nun anymore, and I’m not your mentor anymore - not that you ever listened to me when I was - but for what it’s worth, Ava, the voice in your head that tells you to kill yourself? That’s not God. God wants you to live. You got charmed by some blonde, again. Only this bitch somehow managed to convince both you and Michael that the only way to defeat Adriel was to go rogue and turn yourselves into a divinium suicide bomb that didn’t even work. It Didn’t Work, Ava! Reya lied to you. She played you. Michael didn’t die a hero; he died for nothing. Do you know what did work? Our plan! Infiltrate the cathedral! Destroy the cross! Find the arc! It worked! We were going to defeat him our way, and we would’ve done it, if you’d just trusted your team, for once!”

“I know, but… I was protecting you!” Ava huffed, frustrated, and more than a little indignant, and dropped her face into her hands.

“Yeah, well, it’s kind of hard to protect anyone when you’re dead.”

Ava comes back. She's got some 'splainin to do.

    Summary

At first, Ava feels like she’s doing fine, writing down the numbers of drinks and food left, but when she takes the inventory sheet from the day before, made by Beatrice, Ava realises something that makes her feel ashamed of herself.

Not only did she not understand how taking inventory actually worked but she also saw how bad her handwriting is.

OR: Ava never learnt how to write and Beatrice teaches her.
