Stede is giving him space, because that’s what Ed has asked for. They speak civilly and retire to different cabins at night and sometimes they even take meals with the rest of the crew, but they never sit together.
They’re the farthest thing from friends they’ve ever been, even though both of them want to be more than that. Ed just sort of weirdly pines in Stede’s direction, but he can’t do anything about it because he’s still mad. It makes the whole crew uncomfortable.
Or: Stede is like catnip to other pirates, and Ed isn't thrilled at all these hunky captains suddenly vying for his attention.

“Look - I don’t usually do this, but I am the food critic for The Anchor, and it’s imperative that I -”
“Oh, a food critic! Well that changes things.”
“Sure. What was that name again?”
“Stede Bonnet. Food Critic, Stede Bonnet.”
“Right. Well, fuck off, Food Critic Stede Bonnet. Blackbeard’s Bar and Grill is all booked up.”
The manager at the new restaurant Stede is trying to review is being kind of a dick. A certain member of the waitstaff, however, takes a bit of a liking to him.
“I’m scared,” Dream whispers into the pillow, and it feels like more of an admittance to himself than Sapnap, but Sapnap rubs his back reassuringly anyway. “And I know that’s so dumb. Because it’s just George. But-”
“But it’s George.”
“I used to imagine you had a line here,” he says through a yawn, tracing a line back and forth over Dream’s stomach. “Like, a mark across your body.”
“What?” Dream laughs lightly, tilting his head in confusion. “Why would you think that?
