  1. Summary

Joseph Adama is the Doge of Venice, which is in graceful decline from its peak of maritime economic and naval power. His younger grandson, Zak, has recently eloped to King Louis' court in France with one Kara Thrace, and a dangerous politician, Thomas Zarek, is soon to return from a twenty-year exile related to the untimely death of a previous Doge.

Between Don Zarek's imminent return and the likely imminent increase in the Serene Republic's long-standing rivalry with the Ottoman Empire, Doge Adama wants to shore up a few alliances. He arranges for Laura Roslin, a widowed noblewoman, to marry his similarly-widowed son, Commander William Adama. His elder grandson, Lee Adama, is likewise engaged to the young daughter of Cardinal Gaius Baltar. The first wedding is to take place immediately, the second in approximately a year.

In Istanbul, the Sultan, John Cavil, is indeed scheming and preparing to launch a massive attack on Venice, while internal politics within his own family and court may not be quite as clear-cut as he thinks.

There are spies everywhere, and nothing is certain but that looming problems foreign and domestic promise trouble for the Serene Republic in days to come...

    Summary

There were three things of which Crowley was absolutely certain:

    1. Aziraphale, being an angel, was required to be kind and loving towards all things, even when those things were flawed or sinful or fallen.

    2. Notwithstanding that obligatory kindness, Aziraphale would never, and could never truly love a demon, in any meaningful sense.

    3. Despite this, Crowley was desperately, hopelessly, in love with him.

    Summary

So it was fine. Even if Crowley couldn’t love him, he clearly liked him well enough, and that was almost the same thing.

It no doubt would have continued to be fine, or at least fine-adjacent, were it not for a narrowly averted apocalypse and several bottles of a really quite nice Riesling Aziraphale had found in the back room of his newly restored bookshop.

    Summary

"They say he’s a part of the darkness. That he moves in the shadows and strikes like a snake. That he can charm a queen and then murder a man in cold blood between the appetizer and dessert."

(Or the one where Crowley has become the most powerful mob boss in London, and after saving a certain bag of books, a certain angel is suddenly along for the ride.)

    Summary

In the immediate aftermath of the Nope-Let's-Notpocalypse, Crowley and Aziraphale tentatively begin to move on, hoping Heaven and Hell will leave them alone in the wake of both of their failed trials.

Of course, nothing could possibly be that simple.

It isn't that Gabriel or Beelzebub have actually figured out how the trials were subverted...but boy, do they THINK they have it figured out. Thankfully, it won't take much to keep them in the dark.

(Crowley and Aziraphale just have to spend eternity together, pretending to be in love with each other. All Crowley needs to do is make sure Aziraphale never finds out that everything he's saying and doing is true.)
