    *Not starring J-Lo

Twenty years of friendship had taught Therese a lot about Jacqueline: she hated the beach - more so if it was the ocean (sharks, seagulls, tourists, etc.), no cuisine could match her love for Chinese food (the less authentic, the better), she read many books but rarely finished one, she’d inherited her parents’ tastes for the finer things in life, and she was a horrible planner. The latter two qualities were leading contributing factors to her hiring a wedding planner. An expensive one. One of New York City’s most in-demand.

    Summary

“You know my sister? Carol?” Her boss asked.

    “Of course.”

Carol was pretty unforgettable, both in looks and personality.

“Right. Well, it seems she’s getting a bit stir-crazy working from home the past five months. Her own fault. She’s become a bit of a recluse. Anyway, she wants to work from here, at the gallery. I told her she could, but only if you were comfortable with it.”

Therese didn’t mind. It was just one more person, after all, but she kept listening to all the ways in which Carol had been abundantly safe during the pandemic. She’d seen “maybe three people in person,” constantly got tested, and would probably sooner fling herself into oncoming traffic before she had to come within six feet of a stranger, “though that’s par for the course, for her.” Therese was just surprised she even wanted to leave the house and work elsewhere.

“Well, her air conditioner is broken. That's the only reason why.”

    Summary

Seeing Carol in her apartment was certainly different. She’d been there only a couple times - once to visit Therese and give her the camera bag, meeting Richard in the process, and the second time to help Therese with her bags for their trip. Now there Carol was, but to stay. She didn’t do as much poking and prodding as before. Her movements were timid, like last night, and she waited to move from the doorway.

    Summary

“Oh…my god.” Therese swallowed hard. She knew she was blushing like crazy, and the collective, sing-songy, “oooooh,” coming from her class of nosey ninth graders was not helping the case. They ogled and whispered as Therese scanned the bouquet of flowers, searching for a card despite not needing a clue as to their sender.

Ruby said something like: “they must have cost a fortune,” but Therese was barely listening, having found and opened the card— small and wordless, with just a red heart against a white background on the front— and inside read: Love you. —Carol.

    Summary

The teacher was no doubt the one Carol's niece, Rindy, talked to her about incessantly. The one she not-so-subtly wanted Carol to meet. Rindy hadn’t been lying— her teacher was beautiful. She looked nice, too, ready to pacify the situation despite likely being just as (if not more) irritated herself. The idea that Rindy chose that particular teacher’s class to disrupt was even more perplexing: Rindy actually liked her. Why fall out of her good graces by landing herself in detention?

After a quick round of apologies, a back and forth with Ms. Belivet, it didn’t take long for Carol to recognize the scheming smile barely hidden as Rindy tried and failed to bury her face into the desk.

“Rindy, go wait in the hall.” Carol was livid.

When the door shut, she closed her eyes, taking a moment to come up with the least humiliating way to explain the situation.
