Roan had sworn an oath in front of the Commander and Wanheda that he would protect you. It would, of course, be made easier by the fact that you weren't completely helpless. But even as King of the Ice Nation, Roan finds the task just falling short of his hands -and seemingly yours-, he could almost hear Clarke lecturing him. But the thing that bothered him the most was how readily you forgave him for it.
