Summary
Dementors take every happy moment and tear them from your mind, until there is nothing left but pain.
After Sirius escapes Azkaban, he cannot remember any time he was happy. Whole years of his life are missing, and he knows that they are gone. All he knows is pain and trauma and despair, and he desperately wants to be free of all of it.
When Dumbledore sends him to Remus Lupin, Sirius only remembers a man he fought and argued with. But when Remus realizes Siris cannot remember him: they make a truce. Remus won't treat him like the Sirius from Before, if Sirius will learn how to be happy once more.
It's a difficult compromise, but it's worth it.

His First Bloom, when it comes, is vibrant patch of yellow carnations. He is too young to know what it means, and his parents don’t tell him, just—withdraw, and a much smaller patch of yellow carnations appears on his mother’s ankle.
