“Harrington, wear your suit correctly or I’m throwing you out.” Billie barks, her shadow casting a dark outline over Stevie’s body. Robin, the freckled senior, sits up hastily and ties Stevie’s top so her friend can sit up and confront her.

    And confront Billie, she does.

“Everything was covered, Hargrove.” Stevie hisses, her face red from lying face down and a little sweaty around her hairline. Her skin is probably hot to the touch all over and Billie is dying to find out just how endless her tan must be.

    Summary

"Hey, Hargrove," the chief calls, and the body that's been dragging itself seemingly away from its place of residence freezes.

With a hiss, Billy slowly turns his body to face the car, and under the golden streetlights the bruises spanning across his chest and jaw and cheek - are pitch black yet glow a faint yellow.

"Fuck off, chief," he grits through his teeth, "I didn't do anything wrong this time. Didn't smack around a poor bastard, and I wasn't speeding because if you haven't noticed; I don't have my car. So move on."

A few beats passed as Billy searched Steve’s face. “Talking’s been -- difficult. For me.”

“Hey, it’s fine, you don’t have to-”

Billy held up his hand and Steve stopped talking. “You still have my number?”

The slip of paper that Billy had scribbled his number on was still lying on Steve’s desk. Billy had given it to him the week before the mindflayer came along. “Yep. Still got it.”

“Good. ‘Cause I wouldn’t mind listening.”

    Summary

Two years ago, before everything, so many things, it had been him and Nancy and Tommy and Carol and Barb and beer and cigarettes and a boombox. It had been a starry night and a cloudless sky and a cut hand and then the first time he’d ever made love. Two years ago he’d have called himself sappy. He would have called himself cool. He would have called himself not a coward.

Today, his usually empty house is filled to bursting with friends and food and a scary movie marathon and it feels like nothing’s changed since Starcourt exploded and burned down from a faulty gas line.

    Today, Steve calls himself lonely.
