  1. Summary

Elim Garak has, with the revolution which saw an end to the Cardassia he once served, been allowed to return to his home planet. Untrusted as he is by the new civilian government, he is eventually able to find work with the new civilian investigative service, and predicts a life of quiet duty, humbler than the power he once enjoyed, but still a life of service to the state. Then he meets one Julian Bashir, Federation exile, liar, dilettante, possible spy, a man with almost as many secrets as Garak has himself, and an insufferably interfering character who keeps wading into Garak's cases and proving instrumental to their eventual solution. Clearly, this cannot be borne.

What if Julian had bonded and adopted a child while he and Garak were on Bajor? What if he'd gotten Garak to give him a list of names to pick from- what if Julian became a single father at 28 to one Mila Bashir. It would change everything, wouldn't it?

    Summary

David Copperfield is well educated, well dressed, and has got plenty of money in his pocket. He is, of course, eager to look about him in London. If only Uriah Heep had not attached himself to David for the first days of the journey...

I am actually too frightened of making a fool of myself in front of the author to write this as a comment, but...the David Copperfield/Uriah Heep subfandom has only two writers. Fortunately for us, they're some of the best. The style here is the most wonderful part - very Dickensian, and it feels plausible for the world and for the characters, even as the events are something Dickens is probably spinning in his grave over. There's a real sensuality to how David and Uriah are here, in the language and in their actions, and the way the relationship is examined is lovely. Including Steerforth as a contrast might be the thing that tips this onto my 'favourites' list, though, because that contrast and that interplay of relationships is one of the best parts of this whole fic and I adore every word of it.

Foggy turns the paperback over. "After his best friend talks Del Cash into giving up a prestigious position at a high-ranking legal firm in favor of what amounts to public defense... Is someone seriously writing bad legal thrillers about us going after Fisk?"

"Yes," Matt says. "You should read it."

I don't have especially strong feelings about Marci as a character in canon, but I definitely love her here. And I would definitely be interested to see what happens when a fan of the Rights series tries to hire these two as their counsel, and starts realising how like the characters they are. And then posts about it on tumblr. But, as an extension is unlikely to happen, I will just say that I love Matt and Foggy's characterisation here, which feels so much more real than a lot of fics in this fandom, and that the novels themselves are the sort of thing I would probably like to read. Also, I've always been weak for how other people see my favourite pairings, and this is a fic very focused on that aspect, even without being narrated by an outsider to the relationship.

If it's been written by x_los, then it is probably painfully, heart-stoppingly brilliant, and probably going to hurt you in various complicated, horrible ways that you will nonetheless thoroughly enjoy. This is true of pretty much all their works...but I have to admit, this one is a particular favourite. Part of that is that you so rarely see Chrestomanci fusions (seriously, I want more Chrestomanci fusions), and the other part is that they get across the world and the atmosphere and the details of Series Twelve so beautifully, while having an equally perfect grip on the Blakeverse. The details of the hardship of life in Series One, even little things like Avon having never seen or tasted proper toast before, are wonderful, as is the way Avon and Aven interact when they're finally forced into contact with one another. And there's religion and social commentary and depth to everything, so that I'm forever looking up references and feeling utterly humbled and despairing in my own ability to write anything even remotely as good. I like the way the original Chrestomanci and Howl canons are worked in as history, and all the ways in which this affects people. And I liked matching up all the Chrestomanciverse versions of Blakeverse characters (I've still got hopes of seeing the local Servalan and Travis in the third instalment), and working out all the little details put into their characterisation. I'm looking forward to seeing them interact with their canon counterparts in the future.

David Copperfield finds the prospect of Uriah Heep marrying Agnes Wickfield utterly abhorrent. He isn't exactly right about why.

I was never even remotely into this pairing when reading the book eight years ago, mostly for the sake of being able to say I'd done it, but when you see x_los has written fic about one of your set texts for uni, you devour it quick in the hope that it might get you invested in the book on the re-read. Well...I'm invested. And now, irresistibly, very fond of Uriah Heep. I am going to have a hell of a time in seminars next year. But, seriously, I love this fic. I love the narration, which feels so very Davidesque, and the little lines like how his giving Uriah a handjob is 'against the best medical advice', and his initially assuming his intentions to be 'something in the assault and battery line' (not going to lie, for a moment I read that in Bertie Wooster's voice, which is a very strange thing when reading Dickens fic.) I also really love the way this explores all the depths beneath the fawning compliments and seething bitterness which were all I initially remembered about Uriah. I saw this fic compared to the scene where Richard III seduces Anne Neville in Shakespeare's play, and...yes. This has all the things I loved about that scene, plus a few things I just plain enjoy in fiction in general, such as gayness and things escalating in such a way that one person is not exactly sure what's going on except that they're into it. Sort of. It's complicated. And the way they love and hate each other all at once, but can never be bored with one another and are just...so alike, in ways David refuses to consciously acknowledge. So...yeah. I have an OTP for this fandom now, and there's only one fic for it. (I wonder if x_los would take my sister as payment for writing a few hundred more...)

If I want to be cheered up after a long day, this tends to be the fic I go to. The rough premise, that Foggy is not even remotely Matt's usual type but Matt goes for him anyway and finds he likes all the things that originally gave him pause, is a common romantic trope, but I've rarely seen it pulled off this well. Usually it seems a bit out of left field, but here we get to see all the reasons why Matt might fall in love with Foggy without their history, and I'll admit it, I'm a sucker for Matt and his many, many insecurities. I like the slow evolution of Matt's feelings here, as he comes to realise that there's more to Foggy than he initially presumed, and how the motif of sweetness ties the whole thing together. I will admit, I'm kind of interested in what happened next, how long it takes them to leave Landman and Zack now they're together and how the whole thing with Fisk plays out in a world where Matt has someone who knows about and supports his nocturnal activities from the start. But, at the end of the day, this is a wonderful little self-contained story just as it is, and the perfect antidote to winter depression.
