Summary
The lucky few who have a soulmate are born with heterochromia, with their left eye being the color of their soulmate's eyes and their right eye being their own color.
Not only was Virgil one of the lucky few to have a soulmate, but he was given four. His left eye changed colors every time he blinked, rotating between his four soulmates' eye colors.
His rotating eye colors caused him to be a bit of an outcast growing up, but when he finally leaves for college, things start to fall into place.

Summary
Everyone hurt and scared, little kids crying, police sirens outside and inside they were huddled together, Virgil scared and Roman psyching himself up for a charge and Logan urging, I implore you to keep calm- "Everybody," Patton whispered. "But what if they only shoot me? If I volunteered to be the one they threatened, so they left everyone alone, wouldn't that be okay?"
"You'd be dead," Janus pointed out, and Patton shook his head. "More importantly, however, you don't have that option. You're a Side. It's Thomas in this situation, not you." No. "If you volunteer, they're bringing everyone else up with you. They're putting guns to all their heads." No no no- "Are you going to kill them, Patton? Is being a good person worth that much to you?" His eyes were bright and intense. "Are you willing to die if it takes Thomas with you?"
"No," Patton breathed, and Janus smiled. "But if it was just me-"

There are consequences to overwhelming Morality, and more for ignoring Thomas's Heart.
Too bad no one told the Sides that.

Summary
Janus is allowed to participate in the group, and that is more than enough for them. Almost thirty years of basically not existing right into being able to do their goddamn job at long last? Not too bad of a change up, really, and they aren't going to complain about it any time soon. Patton, however, insists on throwing a wrench into their system- their perfectly functioning, if maybe hypothetically a bit lonely, system. They wished they could be more angry about it than they were.
(In which Janus is accepted, has an identity crisis, and fumbles their way through growth and trust, all the while not nearly as alone as they'd like to convince themself they are.)

Virgil knew about witches. They never did anything out of the goodness of their hearts, and the only uses they had for run-of-the-mill humans were as ingredients, food, or slaves.
Only one of those involved Virgil staying alive.
