“Why did you come here?” Aziraphale interrupts. “Why do you keep doing this?” All the saving, he means, all the chasing after Aziraphale he does. It can’t only be that he’s not keen to endure a replacement. That can’t be it, not anymore. He’s going to get himself in trouble, and then it’ll be Aziraphale’s fault.
Crowley’s mouth shuts with a click. He shifts uncomfortably in his seat, reaches for the handle of the fork and taps his fingertips against it before setting his hands in his lap.
When he speaks, it’s very soft. “Don’t you know?” he asks.
Aziraphale, unnaccustomed to his heart refusing to translate why it throbs with such haste, shakes his head.

The Asset loses Steve’s face in pieces. He cannot recall the exact color of his eyes or hair, or the curve of his lips. Negative space closes in around him. It feels like death. Only on good days can the Asset remember Steve’s name. But it is just a name, a word that makes no sense but feels heavy and significant on his tongue nevertheless.
Every memory, every inch of life, runs out like sand between his fingers.
It isn’t that Illya has a fixation, not anymore than he can fixate on a particularly rooted splinter, or passive aggressive comments made by a colleague, or scabies. That’s what Napoleon Solo is from the moment they set eyes on one another: Under Illya’s skin.
