Summary
There is an ancient belief that two people are bound together by Fate itself; connected by an invisible string stemming from the ulnar artery and out into the world where it intertwines with the string of another.
Sooner or later, they are destined to meet, no matter how far apart they live or how much their life circumstances differ. And, when it happens, that encounter is certain to profoundly affect both of them. The strings can sometimes stretch and become tangled (which could postpone the fateful meeting), but those ties will never be broken.
Wanda and Vision circle one another for years, straying toward other people and possibilities but always magnetically, irresistibly drawn back together. Then, as she veers into self-destruction and he begins to search for meaning elsewhere, each must confront how far they are willing to go to save the other.
This is a story of first loves, second chances, and maybe (just maybe) third time lucky.

Wanda’s head snaps up. Her arms are full of logs. Her eyes are wide and green.
He holds out a hand, his hand, his ghost hand, snow hand, it is his hand, he thinks, “Please don’t scream.”
Wanda screams. The logs drop and clatter and thud into thick snow and she lifts a hand to her mouth to smother the sound.

“No,” he replies, a bit breathless. “I can’t say that I have.”
“I have,” she says. He believes her immediately. “Did you know,” she continues, clutching at the bag in her lap, “that the heart of a star is meant to kill you?”
