The entire forest is silent which doesn’t make sense since there are so many people in it. And even if there wasn’t, even if it was just him and Tony and Pepper and Morgan and Happy, the forest’s never quiet. There was always laughter or amused voices or delighted screaming or maybe the whir of a repulsor bouncing between the trees.
The silence makes Harley’s skin crawl. It makes him want to scream, if he can just bring himself to open his mouth.
He's never gonna hear those things again. The thought chips away a little more at Harley.
Harley fixes things. Everything about his world is broken right now. He finds a way to fix at least one thing.

It’s past noon and Dick still can’t bring himself to get out of bed and into the living room. He’s cocooned in the covers, not quite shivering from a non-existent cold but not quite warm, either. He’s been awake for a few hours already but the thought of even attempting to lift his head from his pillow is exhausting. It’s getting bad.
Not the worst he’s been but slowly getting there. He knows someone’s about to come bursting through the door soon. Someone always comes through the door. The Titans have a sixth sense for days like this. They never seem to hold it against him, no matter how much he thinks they should.

He's felt the change during the past few weeks. First, it had just been a subtle alteration in the air - a kind of slight tension, only noticeable because it came on the heels of Peter Lukas' pernicious apathy. For a few days, Jon doesn't think much of it; perhaps they've finally managed to bond enough as a team that they don't make as easy of a prey for the Lonely. He allows himself to feel smug.
That is, of course, a mistake.

Martin considers for a long, long moment. How is he? Fine, he thinks, except that he woke up this morning with webs obscuring every window in his flat. Except that he knows he’s lying to Jon by not telling him about this, and the knowledge that it would only worry him doesn’t assuage the guilt. Except his hindbrain is itching with secrets that don’t want attention drawn to them, scritch scritch scritch.
I’m good, he texts back eventually. I miss you, though. When are you coming back?

He does fine for a while, for almost a week, until he starts explaining the current state of affairs into the tape recorder. “I’ve managed to secure the services of two researchers to assist me,” he says; then the anger, the overwhelm and the unfairness swells up in him again. “Well, technically three,” he continues, with a tiny, vindictive thrill, “but I don’t count Martin, as he’s unlikely to contribute anything but delays.”
An attempt at answering the question: What if the reason Jon was such a massive prick to Martin for their first few months in the Archives is that they used to date?
