“Said the youngest Zemnian Grandmaster in history,” Essek pointed out with a roll of his eyes.
On the eve of the biggest match of his life, Essek Thelyss the young, upstart dragonchess player has an interaction with his only real competition. Essek's biggest problem is that he doesn't know how to feel about that.

“Happy All Hallow’s Eve,” the master of this slice of the feywild greeted. “I was wondering if I would see you again.”
“I, of course, would never pass up the opportunity...so long as you’ll invite me in,” Essek said, remaining on the edge of the space. The barrier between him and the fey pulsed and stretched taut over Essek’s skin. The fey smiled a sharp knowing smile.
“Of course,” he said. “You are welcome here, and are owed all of my hospitality.”
Essek has a friend he only gets to see four times a year, and enjoys taking advantage of his hospitality. Especially on All Hallow's Eve.

Veth squeezed his hand gently and patted the back. “I’ve gotta pay bail first. Then we can get you out.” She whispered, forlorn, and placed a dry peck of the lips on his knuckles.
The boy still didn’t answer her. His fear was still a mask over his face, and Veth looked at it with a frown.
“I won’t hurt you, my boy.” She whispered. “I wouldn’t dream of it.”
I wanted an alternate backstory where Veth meets a Feebleminded Bren and takes him in. And since they say ”God helps those who help themselves”, I just went ahead and started making it myself. Enjoy.

They are looking forward to a scenic journey through Rohan and lots of quality time, just the two of them – that is, until they encounter a party of travelers from the Westfold Valley walking in the same direction. When they realize that their new companions are inexperienced travelers and unprepared for the journey that awaits them, they cannot in good conscience leave them behind.
